Anyone know what the score is with windscreens at the moment?
I've been putting off having one fitted for years as it's only a got a few chips that get flagged every MOT but never get any worse but getting the car out today it's got a great big crack going from the top of the screen on the passenger side about 6 inches long, probably the stresses from the last trackday
Anyway it'll be down to the insurance but I'm guessing the usual method is take it to the fitters place as I don't really trust a mobile unit to get it right first time but are there any issues getting a screen in the first place these days?

We have fitted both Safevue 'copy' windscreens and the TVR logo'd screens made in Finland.
In my opinion, there is more variation in the cars than there is difference between the types of screens. We have seen cars where the TVR marked screen would not fit well and neither would the Safevue one. I know of one car in Chesterfield area that had six of the TVR logo screens tried in it before one was found that was acceptable. This was in early 2007 before David Gerald and TVR Power received their first supplies from Finland.
Either screen will fit; any problems are usually down to poor technique or lack of experience on the part of the fitter. We have specific very experienced people that are used for this type of installation. Unfortunately this is not always the case with some companies.

I had mine done by RAC Auto Windscreens a few months ago. They did a sterling job.
It was covered by insurance, so I only had to pay an excesss of 60 pounds.
They will not do the job through a mobile team, you'll have to bring the car to their garage (I brought itr in 9AM and could pick it up 3PM). If they say that the mobile unit will do the job, hands off!

I had mine done by RAC Autowindscreens in Maidstone (I realise that's no help to you!).
I was lucky to find that they have guy there who used to fit the screens for Walldonway when they were TVR dealers, and also does all the screens to the local Ferrari dealer. I had a discussion with him and was asked to bring the car in at 9 am and collect it the following morning to enable to adhesive to set, also he said he didn't want me ringing up every hour to see if it was ready!.
Collected it the next day and he had done an excellent job with no damage to the precious trim on my P&J.
Perhaps ring your local TVR dealer (do they exist, who knows?) see who they use. Why not contact a Ferrari dealer and ask the same question, can't do any harm. I'm sure their customers are as fussy as we are, delicate trim etc:
Above all, visit the guy who will do the work to satisfy yourself as to his competence

Had mine done by Autoglass, super nice lads, taken it back twice and still not right. Top rubber and side rubbers not fixed properly, wonky, and galss is slightly crooked, and a few CM high.
My insurance have agreed to let me take it to a dealer/specialist and I've identified a guy in Guilford who has looked at it, says he can fix it, comes highly recommended and has done hundreds. £170 ish for fitting (excl glass of course). If Guilford is near you I'll forward his details.
Good luck

Unfortunatly not, North Nottingham. It's not really fell at a very convenient time (but when do they) so going to get onto it next week.
Think the insurance company use Auto Glass who have a branch just around the corner, just hope someone there has done one before.
Just got mine back from National Mobile Windscreens (Gloucester depot) - they insisted it was done at the depot.
The fitter spent about 20 minutes talking to me about the car - how they'd do it - the ones they've done before and problems they'd encountered etc.
They've had the car since wednesday morning.
Once they'd removed the old screen they found the mounting had rusted a little so the prepared the mounting (sanded down any rust in the, then primed and painted it)
Called me in to make sure I was happy with it.
Then yesterday they fitted the screen and asked if I could leave it overnight to set.
End result - looks great - no damage they did a great and really careful job

Thats interesting to know as mine is quite badly delaminated and I live near to gloucester. The fitter spent about 20 minutes talking to me about the car - how they'd do it - the ones they've done before and problems they'd encountered etc.

My insurers - originally wanted it done at with the RAC but there were problems getting hold of the glass - I spoke to my broker - APlan and they arranged it all - spoke to the garage and made sure they had experience, sourced a non surevue/clearvue screen.Really pleased - was gutted when I saw the damage to the screen from some flying tarmac and having read some awful experience on here, but now I couldn't be happier!

I had my '95 Chim's screen replaced by RAC Autowindscreens in Leeds. John from Sports & Specialist Cars advised me to specify a genuine TVR manufacturer windscreen, which I did. This took a little longer to arrive. I spoke at length with the technician who fitted it. RAC said that this guy was the only one of their team who did TVRs, as they "are a bl****y nightmare".
It took him all day at the depot, and the job was as perfect as at can be. He even replaced the TVRCC and Pistonheads stickers in exactly the same place.
A few months down the line and it still looks good and doesn't leak despite the downpours we'ved had.

Unfortunately this is not always the case with some companies.
Nothing unfortunate there (for you and I).When we attended BBWF in 2006, the mess and damage that we found when we removed screens fitted previously was of real concern.
One Griffith that we had in recently had a black band across the top of the screen about an inch or so deeper than standard. It had been done using the black primer to hide the damage to the interior trim on the top windscreen rail. The top outer trim and lower finisher had both been sliced when the screen was removed by the 'expert installers'. Now thankfully all sorted and another very happy customer.
TVRs are/were hand built; windscreen replacement is not the same as the usual Eurobox. It needs more skill than is possessed by the average trainee with six months experience. If you are told that your car cannot be done mobile and that we want to keep it overnight in the workshops, then please believe us; it's for a good reason.

....And driving home this evening - crack - I get another bloody boulder into the screen. It bounced off the bonnet and cracked the screen. The fitter spent about 20 minutes talking to me about the car - how they'd do it - the ones they've done before and problems they'd encountered etc.

Well with one thing and another I've been too busy to get it sorted but....
It goes into the Mansfield branch of RAC Autowindsceens on Wednesday
The chap on the phone sounds nice enough and the insurance company stated that the job has a 'to be done by someone experianced' on the job sheet, so by the end of the week it might be sorted.
