Anyone any idea how expensive / big a job replacing the alternator is on a 996TT.

Car let me down today. Driving down to the Goodwood Breakfast Club Meet, the "battery / alternator" warning light comes on.
Odd, but nothing too major I think to myself.

On the way home, every (& I mean every) warning light comes on, so I pull over & turn the engine off, try to restart & nothing, wont even turn over.

RAC say knackered alternator (battery is not charging & just draining) and shouldn't be driven so it was low-loaded to HA Fox (luckily brother is MD there) because Porsche Guildford refused to take the car in. I get all my servicing done there, all maintenance too and its due a service now, so I asked them to take it in & service it next week too - flat refused.

Anyway - back to original thread - alternator - expensive ?

OPC Guildford hehehehe

I assume you'll give them no more business as I have done since 2001?

RAC guy tried to tell me my alternator was bad too about 9 months ago when my battery died for the second time. The stock battery is known to be total garbage - prolly good for only 3yrs. I threw an Optima Red-top in and it's performed flawlessly since.

Hello

Alternator job on 996TT would cost you around £400-00 fitted.

Deffo not battery - changed it about 5 weeks ago and at the same time bought a trickly charger as the car sits around a fair bit, so the battery is in tip top condition.

I am pretty sure its the alternator, its not charging the battery, so the battery is just draining away when its not on trickle charge.

Yes Guildford OPC, what a great bunch. I just called them and exaplained that I am in central London, the car is 100 yards away at HA Fox and could one of their drivers possibly just pop over & get it because I cant bring it in.

"Oh no we can't do that sir"

So now I have to get one of the HA Fox drivers to pop it over the road to Porsche.

Car is due a service in 2 weeks and was going to ask them to do it at the same time as the alternator. Probably take it somewhere else now.

Simply way to test - start the car (with a manually changed battery) and look at your voltmeter on the dash - if it hovers around 14v then the alternator is charging (*) - if staying around 12v then it's not...

(*) A 14v reading is a good indicator that it's charging, but it's not a 100% given that it's charging properly.

PS - On the alternator, you may be able to get an exchange unit cheaper - it's usually only the rectifier pack (diodes) that 'go' and there is nothing wrong with the bulk of the unit.
