After yesterday's lap at Rockingham, a few Cerbs had their bonnets up on the car park to try and get rid of the heat.

Although my fan kicked in and out and the temperature was ok I noticed my fan arrangement was different to others.

Most had a cowl at the rear of the rad with two fans, a big one that has a cut out on the fibreglass to accommodate the motor and a smaller fan.

My 4.2 has no cowl (the rad is visible) and one fan in the centre. It looks like it should be this way because the cut out in the fibreglass is central.

Is this how it should be or is there something missing?

P.S. I’m still laughing at the thought of that tunnel biglaugh

There's ya answer then.

On my 450 LWT, looking from the drivers seat forward, the left fan is for the engine cooling and the right is for the air con.

Someone told me the two fans come in at different temperatures. Should the black cowl still be around the rad or is that it with no A/C.

My car had the single fan arrangement as it too has no air con. This was how earlier cars were configured if air con was not fitted, I believe. If 2 fans are fitted, then the left hand one comes on first, with the right hand one comming on a few degrees later if temp continues to rise. I upgraded to the 2 fan setup:

Remove rad and move central fan to left side. The right hand fan, obtained from a breakers, fitted straight on, with a little bit of tweaking of the aluminum plate whech holds the fan cowls to the rad. Note that the right hand fan is different, whith the motor sticking out less than on the original, now left hand, unit. Wiring for the second fan is in situ, under the panel in front of the engine. You need to install a relay into the fuse box for the extra fan. Just plugs in and off you go!

At the same time, I added a cooling chip from TCS. This switches the fans in earlier. Worked perfectly yesterday at Rockingham... Heat rises, fans come on, heat drops and fans switch off again. I would still like to see the fans stay running after the engine is turned off though, to reduce heat soak.

Thanks Jon, overheating didn't seem a problem yesterday, fan came on just over 100 and knocked off about 90. I don't fancy having to trim the fibreglass to clear the fan motor if I move it.
