Shimano Deore LX 581 SGS rear mech, will it work on an 8 spd transmission with Shimano EF50 EZ fire plus shifters?

Thanks in advance

The indexing is all in the shifter - the rear mech cares not whether it's a 7-, 8- or 9-speed setup.

This is true, the other area of interest is the cable pull, i.e. how much cable has to be pulled to move the derailleur the amount required. So any shimano shifter will operate any shimano rear derailleur.

The only other that needs to be considered is the spacing on the rear gear cluster, this is nicely sorted on mountain bikes they are all the same, whereas road is either campagnolo or shimano, why they cant all be the same is a shame it would make life so much easier.

True dat. But don't forget 7speed (and 8speed???) chains are thicker than 9speed so it might be a tight fit?

Nah - s'fine. I run a mix of 8- and 9-speed stuff on both bikes with no issues. Key is to match the chain & cassette to avoid incompatibility.
