Some of you guys swear by this for the roof.

Before I go out and buy some does anyone know of any side affects and is this flexible enough to be used on the rear part?

Thanks in advance

can darken coloured roofs slightly, is very runny so apply with care. the solvent can dissolve (or at least soften) glue holding material to roof/frame. once applied and dried you won't know it's there.

Thanks for that.
Would Renovo be a better option?

Thompsons is excellent - waterproofs and darkens a sun-faded roof. I used it several times a year. Take off the roof panel and do that separately, so you can really splash it on (with a paintbrush) but try to avoid painting the rubber seals. Do the fixed roof bit carefully, and avoid splashing the stuff onto the paintwork. I used to put sheets on the body to protect it. I also made sure to cover right to the edges to get the stitching waterproofed too.

I've only heard good things of Waterseal.

However, they actually make about ten different versions of it, so check that the one you use is designed for (brick and) canvas.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to remove the fabric hood?? I was intending to use lots of newspaper and masking tape...

I have always used Fabseal as well, no problems either, and works really well, makes the roof look like new.

Can be bought in a spray can too, which is what I used.
Thanks for the spelling correction (crap at spelling anyway), it was 7 years ago when I last bought some.

Not wanting to start a debate but spray on is not the same. I tried it once and was disappointed that the silicon just sat on the surface fibres. For good waterproofing you need to drench the fabric in several layers of liquid and let it dry.

As for Thompson v Fabsil I don't think there's any difference. This is a simple case of silicon dissolved in a volatile liquid. Once the volatiles have evaporated you are left with dry(ish) silicon wax.

Here's my method

Has anyone managed to remove Thompsons from their paintwork after application? I thought i was doing pretty well wiping up spills as they appeared, but hadnt factored on the stuff flowing down the drainage channel around the boot - and down past the numberplate.

I presume its just silicon wax. Maybe turps will do it, but will it harm the paintwork too ?
