HID conversion question

Hello all,
I see that some of you have done the HID conversion. I am planning on the upgrade but have a few questions. I have seen the Sylvania X5006 kit, but I am a bit unclear exactly how it works. Only 2 lights are included. Are these the high or low beam? Do the HID lights come on in high/low beam and then the original halogen lights come on vise/vera? What about the fog lights? I see that Sylvania offers a kit for this as well, but does the provided lamps fit in the original locations? And lastly, the sylvania site is showing that the x5006 kit is out of stock. Anyone have any suggestions of a good place to purchase?

I installed the Sylvania XR5006 HID kit over a year ago and am pleased with the results. I did not use their supplied wiring harnesses however as they are simply to bulky and would require drilling and such and would still be a bit messy.
The only bit that takes some time is grinding and fitting the Lucas headlight mounts so they new light assemblies fits (have to say the Lucas mounts are absolute trash). Beyond this I used some clear tubing as a "filler" to keep the lights snug in the mounts. Mounting of the ballasts was simple: one hole drilled in the headlamp pod and I used all stock wiring (and the inline fuse for the ballasts).
The Sylvania kit is designed so the HID (low or dip beam) remains on when the H1 (high or main beam) is turned on. The kit includes a large black plastic box they call a bridge to accomplish this, but I scanned thru the schematics in the manual and used a small 1N4007 diode (which I have hundreds of) to bridge the relays together which accomplishes the same thing and is much more tidy. Note that the supplied bridge is nothing more than a diode.
If you can find the kit, it's worth it and the installation can be done in about an hour per side. Be sure to have them properly aligned however. It's nice to have current lighting technology.

Thanks for the info KM. Thats exactly what I was trying to find out. So the high beams are actually the normal halogen lights and the HID low beams at the same time and the low beam is strictly HID right?
Also, anyone have info a HID fog light conversion?

Not exactly sure what you are asking.... the XR5006 kit provides four lights: two HID units with ballasts for low beam and two H1 Halogen units (with removable bulbs) for high beam. They are not standard in a generic sense however as all units are specifically designed and manufactured by Sylvania and are only designed to work as a pair or system. Also note that all units are polycarbonate lenses. Hope this helps.

OK, that answers it. The picture of the system I have seen advertised shows only 2 lights. I didn't know that it came with 2 HID and 2 halogen lights.

Well, found this while searching about... they claim to have the XR5006 kit in stock and a nice price (about half of I bought mine for a year ago).

Hi KM. yeah, I have been to that site and inquired about purchasing that kit, but they said they were out of stock until mid July. Being that I am going to be home until July 19th, I would like to have the parts delivered before then so I can install it. Any other place to order?

I too am out of the country right now. Hence no access to the Esprit and such but at some point I do want to swap the driving lights out some better and brighter HIDs. It's something on the "list" but not urgent as of yet.
Drop me a note when you are ready to install and I'll email some pics and a much simpler installation method which is much cleaner, faster and works great.

Like I said, out of the country (like 5000 miles away from my Esprit) and have to many other priorities awaiting me when I get back. I can look at the manual next week when I return to see which bulbs are used in the lower driving lights. While I would like to replace them at some point with something better it's not going to be soon.
