That was my rear end heading towards work after another visit to Demon Tweeks. Day off today spent clocking up some more miles and generally hooning around the Cheshire country side. Took one of the lads at work out for a spin in the car! Managed to get my car booked in for its next mapping session! Not until the 15th Sept. Lots of people on holiday. Oh well, plenty of time to get some more miles on the clock.

Hi Dave can you explain to us numptys (well me anyway) what you do when you do these mappings (i.e. what exactly are you mapping and how) and why does it take several iterations to sort it ? Thx.
p.s. Can you let me know the full spec of your Holly Commander so I can price it up - oh and how DIY is it really ?

The only reason I'm doing my mapping in two sessions is that I did not want to load the engine too much until I had a chance to run it in. In my first mapping session I only mapped the engine on full load to 4000rpm. This time around I will be going all the way (full power). You start with a base map. This is usually good enough to get the engine started and gives you a good starting point. The Holley commander system comes with about 40 diffrent base maps preloaded. I started by mapping the fueling. My setup runs in Speed Density. That is RPM plotted against MAP (manifold absolute pressure). MAP is the vacuum and boost that the engine makes. We have a 16 by 16 grid. RPM along the bottom and MAP up the side. The dyno allows you to drive easily to different areas of the grid. These areas are known as load cells. Each of the cells represent how much fuel is being injected for a certain load and rpm. Each cell is aiming for a particular Air fuel Ratio. My system is fitted with a lambda sensor which with the ECU tells you what your AFR is. The system can self adjust with a given range. Then there is the ignition map. This works in the same way in that we have the same 16 by 16 grid with RPM against MAP. This time the load cell contains the igntion advance figure (degrees before TDC). Again we drive the car and dyno to all the areas of the map in the search for the best power at given igntions timings. The ignition is usually backed off a couple of degrees from where maximum power is produced to be on the safe side of detonation cccuring. There are lots of other perameters that can be adjusted but I would end up writing a book on the subject. The Holley manual that comes with the ECU is very good and expains it all very well.
