Griff will not idle - 500HC 1995
Discussion
The car serviced by Fernhurst in June, has been running perfectly. Started running rough, would not idle, engine would die. If the revs were kept up, ran fine. So I did the usual - removed and cleaned the stepper motor, reset the ECU (unplugged/reconnected). Car ran fine for 1 day. Next day, exactly the same symptoms. The car will start from cold, will idle at 950/1000 rpm for several minutes, but as it warms up starts to hesitate and die. If I catch it and give it some throttle, will run cleanly with no misfire at 1500 revs and above indefinitely, but as soon as you let the revs drop, will die.
Fernhurst talked me through checking all connectors, I replaced the distributor cap and rotor arem before the service, there is plenty of petrol.....!! As I live on the Isle of Wight, I'm a bit stuck - no TVR specialists nearby.
Any thoughts? Cheers.

Dulfords are the nearest Guys to you I think, or at least one some others use down that neck of the woods.
Resetting the ecu only clears the fault,If the fault is still there the same probs will occur. Nt sure if CliveF on here has a fault reader as he is on the IOW too.
Has the Temp sensor been tested?

The temp sensor has not been tested yet, but I have had a few problems with the temp gauge. It normally shows 90 degrees give or take when fully warmed up, but sometimes will just drop to 70 and stay there. But..this is intermittent and hasn't done it recently.
Fernhurst usually service the car, and have been very helpful on the phone...I doubt if I could get it to Dulfords even if they are a lot closer as it is virtually undriveable with no idle - although it runs perfectly at higher revs. Would a faulty temp sensor cause the idle speed to fall?

hi Steve, good to see another islander on here.
Dave, aka dnb, is also a griff owner near Newport, and he is an expert on electrics, ecu`s ect, drop him a mail via his profile he will be very happy to help you out.
fancy meeting up sometime, need to boost the numbers at the local tvr meets .

Clive - many thanks for the info, I'll try and contact dnb as I don't seem to be able to sort it out.
I would be glad to meet up for a chat sometime, once I get the Griff running properly again! I know we are a bit thin on the ground on the Island, I hardly ever see other TVR's when I'm out and about.

Given the few TVRs on the IOW, the dairymans meets only tend to happen when there's something going on. (And when we're not changing cams or otherwise rebuilding the damned cars!)
There's a meet at 2 o'clock this Sunday, but I'd have to ask my other half exactly where...
As for the idle problem, there's a few things I can do on and above the obvious things you've tried, so the best thing would be to email me and we can arrange something.

Hi All
dnb has just been over to mine to help with my idle probs, and he tested the stepper motor for me, which appears to be working fine, going through its in-out cycle on ignition on in his car. We then adjusted the base idle setting after some advice from Brian at Fernhurst, and this seems to have improved things a lot. At least it didn't stall at all from cold to full working temp, so now I'm just going to road test it, as Brian also advised giving a good thrash to clean it out.....!
Cheers
