Are the KV6 engines as prone to HGF as their 4cylinder cousins? If so are there any options to improve the setup, like the metal head gasket and steel dowels for the 4pots?

The original KV6 used in the face lifted Rover 800 was a bit of a nightmare, but the engine was subtantialy re-engineered after this and used the metal shim type gaskets that are currently retro-fitted to the 4 cylinder K series. These are generaly very reliable, you hear of very few problems with the V6 75's and 45's.

The original engine design was licensed to Kia (before all the problems came to light) and fitted to the Australian Kia Carnival, and around 40% of them failed!
