I received a VAT return for one of my businesses this morning, this return gets sent to my house rather than my office. At home I have a seven month old puppy who has taken a liking to the delivery of the morning post.

By the time I had heard the post come through the door, finished my phone call and got downstairs, the puppy had eaten half of the return. Cue an embarrassed phone call to the helpline to ask for a duplicate return and that my phone call not be featured in their annual round up of their best recorded phone calls.

Surprisingly they were very nice about it, especially after the helpful lady had stopped laughing!

Hmm, I wonder if that could count as "failure to take reasonable care" under the new penalty structure in FA 2007... maybe Customs guidance will explain in due course coffee
