H&R Builds 250bhp Golf GTi
Don't sign the cheque for that S3 just yet...
Tuning firm H&R has been fiddling with the Golf GTi, and we think they’ve made a bit of a peach.
They’ve added a Super Sprint turbo-back exhaust and a reflashed ECU into the mix, which takes the power up to an S3-rivalling 250bhp.
In addition to power mods, they’ve fettled the suspension - they hope that adding a new coilover arrangement, wheel spacers and 26mm front and 24mm rear sway bars will make it handle better than before, too.
As far as cosmetics go, this GTi looks pretty respectable. It’s been given 18in OZ Ultraleggera wheels and a very sleek looking body kit.
The inside has also been mildly revised with new leather and aluminium trim pieces and a hefty ‘ICE’ package.
Discussion
What a silly comparison, the new S3 has 4WD for a start and is a much nicer place to be than the GTi in my opinion. The S3 is expensive, but if you want a cheaper car with similar power surely you'd be better off looking at the Leon and getting that remapped as it'll probably be better and cheaper than the golf...
I had mine remapped by AMD to 252bhp and 283 lb/ft and it was very well behaved. A little subtlety with the throttle in first and second went a long way. Once hooked up it was a seriously rapid car. And the noise was slightly raspier even on standard exhausts. Remap cost £500 + VAT from memory, think it was a special offer but the standard price is only 650ish.
I don't reckon the S3 interior is that much better either if you have leather in the Golf...

I don't get why it wasn't like this in the first place.
I actually prefer the Golf GTI to the S3 based purely on looks. The oh so cool, minimal styling of modern Audis is getting a tad boring IMO. The latest Golf GTI looks a bit of sort to me and finally looks like a Golf worth having (based on what I've read) even though it's too big and probably not a true Golf anymore. Anyway, it's got to be better than the last few generations of overrated, dull, slow Golfs.

One for the max power readers to get slightly moist about.
Now if they had actually done something good like make it lighter or rear wheel drive it might be news worthy. As it stands, its overweight, under powered and handles dangerously - what power it does have seems intent on dragging it off the road and into a ditch in a rage of torque steer.
