Re: Porsche G50-G96

There are several series of G96 transmissions. The regular Carrera G96.0x manual gearboxes do NOT have the same bolt pattern, circle, radius, diameter, or anything as a G50. The Turbo and GT3 gearboxes DO have the same old G50 bolt pattern & circle. Same as a G50 or G50/50. Bigger price though ;-)
If we can find ways to use the G96.0x transmissions (in kit cars), that will break open the G50 shortage once and for all. Porsche made thousands of G50 cars, but they made over 100,000 of each of the later ones.
Summary of G96 types, quite a variety really:
G96.00 and G96.01 - standard 996 Carrera.
G96.30 and G96.31 - 996 C4 (AWD).
G86 are the Boxster version of G96/0x.
These all have the NEW bellhousing bolt pattern.
Then come the big ones which all evolved from the G50/50:
G96.50 - AWD twin turbo
G96.88 - 2WD GT2 turbo
G96.90 - GT3 transmission
G96.96 - GT3 2004+, with gear oil pump & heat exchanger
These all have the OLD (G50) bellhousing bolt pattern
All are cable-shifters, no more shift-rod

certainly right about the big diff ones as I have a GT2 and a GT3 one and they basically use large diff G50 internals in a cable shift box and the mountings are the same.Re: Porsche G50-G96

Must abmit I though the other std 996 Getrags had a different identification number and these have a very different front mounting face.
Thanks for the info chaps as I’m trying to follow this thread with interest but have no real knowledge of the gearboxes. The name Getrag it would now appear is loosely used when referring to the Ultima to identify the 6 speed – cableshift supplied by Ultima with the new bellhousing where the starter needs to sit on the engine side of the adapter plate.
Do you know which model of gearbox this is?
Does the serial number start with the model type?
For info the serial number of my factory supplied ‘Getrag’ box is: - G9600108****
- would it therefore be a standard 996 Carrera?
Does the serial number identify if it has a limited slip diff or was this standard on this model?
This interests me with the LS7 engine in mind because this requires the old G50 bellhousing as the starter motor needs to be mounted on the gearbox side.
I love the ‘Getrag’ cable gearchange and would like to stick with it.
Could all the newer boxes that use the G50 bellhousing be used with the LS7 i.e. could the starter be mounted on the gearbox side.
Could any of these be used for an LS7 or are the AWD awkward to adapt/blank off
G96.50 - AWD twin turbo
G96.88 - 2WD GT2 turbo
G96.90 - GT3 transmission
G96.96 - GT3 2004+, with gear oil pump & heat exchanger

The adapter plates to the LSx are generally avalible. Douglas Gardner offers a very good package in the UK
I found the one in Australia - www.bncproducts.com
The LS1/G50 kit is $950 AUD + approx. $232.5 for post (ie airmail up to 20 kg)
The lexus kit is $850aud and the Windsor (ford) kit is $1150 aud + same postage -- delivery is 7-10 days

Yep so the last lot can use the standard G50 adapter plates even though the casing is unique AND (unlike the other 996 Getrags) can have the starter on the gearbox side.... they are basically a cable shift big diff G50. G96.00 and G96.01 - standard 996 Carrera.
