Opinions on 2001 R1 please

Hi Guys
In my quest for a bit more speed
I went to look at an 01 R1 today. A gorgeous looking example with custom paintwork. To my suprise my feet could touch the floor and it felt way more comfortable that 'orrible 07 R6 I rode recently. It looked in good condition, I liked the seller and had low sub 10k miles.
Minor Downsides are it may have been dropped on 1 sided many moons ago and been repaired all v.neat mind, secondly the current owner has had it all serviced up and MOT but theres no history from the previous few owners (apparently the previous, previous owner got it from a large motorbike chain).
Is there anything I should be looking out for on the R1 (yes, yes I should probably have asked this before going round but it was local!!) and is a lack of history and multiple owners a worry?

Get the front end of the ground and check for play in the head bearings - apparently the earlier R1s are prone to having oval head tubes due to wheelies, don't know if all R1s are also so fragile. I'm not sure i'd want a bike with a custom paint job though - it may be more difficult to sell on as people may assume the paint is covering up accident damage. It all depends on the price really - if the price is right...
No major faults to look out for that I'm aware of.
As Dave said, custom plaint job can mean it is more difficult to sell on. I wouldn't worry about the service history on an 01 bike as long as the bike rides well and looks like it has been looked after.
Go for it.
PS: If you want a second opinion and it's local, I would be happy to take a look at it with you.

Cheers Dave yep the Hornet was me, black is the fastest colour
. One careful owner never thrashed etc etc. It does seem suprisingly fast in a straight line for what it is, never seesm to lose out to the sports 600s. Perhaps the benefit of being a 9 stone midget helps in the pwr to weight stakes (had it dynod last year and it made a whooping 86 rw bhp woooo scary stuff indeed
)

BTW, wasn't that you on the Hornet6 on Saturday? Chris, Woody and I were talking about you when we got back to Andover - you were seriously hustling that lil Hornet along; we were all duly impressed.
Would be good to ride with you once you've got to grips with an R1!
2nd'ed good work on the hornet 6 mate...seriously

Just goes to show, it's not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog! You were doing a pretty good job of keeping with Chris, Woody and I on superbikes, and we certainly weren't hanging about!!

It was hard enough sticking with you on the Hornet let alone a R1!
If we meet up again for another ride I vote we stick some ballast on your bike to slow you down!
What bike were you on Scott?

I have a feeling he was on the Gixxer 750, but names aren't really my strong point!
Scott was on a GSXR750 and reckons we had 1.5(speedo) mph on the super long straight private road (thank fk for that fly screen), where we level pegged it for a few miles, until his oil light came on and he hit the anchors
You guys on the Blades, R1s must have made about 1.7 down there?

I had one and they are awesome. Only the awesomeness of R1s varies. 'cept maybe the '03, which Ive heard is poo.
Anyway, get one, get it jetted and exhausted and clean up mates on much newer bikes.
R1 riders get and deserve a certain kind of recognition that you dont get on a GSXR or 'Blade I reckon.
