circlip is known to bust on the 5/6 gearshaft. Had it happen on the coupe not long after it came to UK and had to really kick off with HSV as I'd voided the w'ty by leaving Oz. Had to pay labour in the end but got a new T56 sent from Oz - when I say kick off, i REALLY had to go to the top at Clayton b4 getting any joy. I was told by a Tremec expert that this can be the achilles heel of one of the worlds strongest boxes - flog it all day long in a 1000hp drift car - not a prob - cruise around in 5th and 6th below 2000rpm (typical "daily driver" coasting I would say) and the circlip will go bung - what happens next is a lottery, loose bits of metal floating round in a gearbox is never a good thing.
Don't worry to much, it most case the circlip just moves out of the detent and all that is need is to slip it along the rail, this is not rocket science and most certainly dosen't need a new box, any good mechanic can do the fix.
It is a very old problem with that box, the T4/T5/T56 and so on, all suffer the same problem, yes for over 30 years and no one has fixed it yet.
Good luck and hope you get it fixed soon.

Main thing is get it looked at asap - I guess the longer you have internal bits moving around, the greater the chance of "unnatural" damage. The end of the shaft can wear & in my case the 5/6 cogs ended up damaged too
Just had my gearbox replaced. 6th was only achievable at low speed (50mphish) and fifth was hard to engage and threw out of gear with low power application. Stick moved back and forth too in 5th with power on/off.
Reported to Greens Holborough after a chat to Roger at Monkfish. Issue reported ONE WEEK after warranty expired, though problem evident for some time before that. Initial offer by Vauxhall was 75% of cost of replacement... I insisted that it should be free since...
1) Only 35,000 miles
2) Only 1 week out of warranty and problem evident before then
3) I was aware that there was a known issue.
Basically I stuck to my guns, and they replaced the gearbox FOC for me... I was happy, but it was the right decision. Had to drive a Saab (ugh) for a fortnight but hey, got my Ro back now!

Silver CV8 ??
If so, you made my day when you did your leaving fly by!! I listen to these cars everyday, but hearing yours just made the hairs on th back of the neck stand up, it was awesome!!!
PS
Dan enjoyed the drving lesson!!
Thanks for all the info so far.
Car is in with Picador's as we speak so hopefully they can do what is required. I 'think' it is in the very early stages as it has only just done it. Chris managed to put it in all gears no problems this afternoon - me I just wanted treat it gentle until it got looked at.
Looks like it is a design fault that is cheaper for them to repair/replace than actually fix the design - though I could of course be totally wrong.

Yes, that was me. If it weren't for the temporary lights and a little traffic I might have been a little more spirited. At 4,000 rpm it really starts to howl... just need the scream of the S/C now! The aim was to get as close as possible to the V8 Supercar sound... I think I'm not far off it now
The Saab was a great car, but diesel, so really unappealing from a driving point of view.
And I think Dan was in agreement with my comments after my test drive of the VXR8 once he'd been up the road and back in mine!

My car needs a new gearbox
Would those that have had similar issues to mine please pm me with your name and registration number.
Equally Brian @ Greens would you mind getting in touch as well as what you were able to do for gas man seems remarkable.
Any links to other forums where people have seen similar issues please let me know.
If I have to pay it is goodbye Monaro - Mrs AM04ARO is not happy!!

I also have a very unhappy 40K gearbox. I don't think that it's the same issue (haven't got that far in investigating it yet) but look on the bright side - it's in a Ro and you have the possibility of a warranty repair. Mines in a GTS !

Have to say Vauxhall Customer Care were fantastic.
They listened to my point of view, incidents of other problems and chenged there point of view and we reached agreement.
to the 'large car' customer care people at Vauxhall. I also have to say thank you to those that have told me of their own issues as this certainly helped.
