Speeding Motorists in 30 limit - what can be done?
Discussion
Our house is in a 30limit on a road which links the village to a couple of others.
It's 30MPH for a looooong way up to the village - there is a speed camera, a flashing SLOW DOWN sign etc on the approach.
The final approach is uphill with a large bank on one side, houses directly onto the road on the other. It's got streetlights, and long dash - short gap road markings.
Just past the house is a black-on-white 30MPH reminder, and the start of some speed bumps.
Problem I have is that the local chavs treat this as some form of hillclimb / time trial. I can lie in bed and hear the Scoobies and Evos PER-TISHing like mad as they cane it to the limiter in as many gears as possible before braking hard for the speed bumps.
Short of dressing in a hi-vis vest and popping out with a hairdryer, what can be done? I don't want more tank traps on the road, I don't want more cameras, and the current setup is clearly not working either.
This is a good area btw and kids cross the road from the sidestreets to head over to the shops on a sidestreet across the road. It's only a matter of time until there's a serious RTA there.
Oh and every winter the corner collects cars on their roofs

Try getting the council to make the limit fit the road.
I find it far easier to obay realistic and sensible 30 and 40's than the sort we tend to have around here were over the space of 3 miles you have a mile long 40 buffer then a 30 and then another mile long 40 buffer for what should really be about 1/2 a mile of 30

It needs to be 30. It's a series of blind corners on a steep hill in a residential area on a bus route!
Why? It's a limit, not a target. There's MILES of roads in the Lake district that are barel wide enough for two cars where you can't see more than 50 yds ahead, and these were always NSL. Give Darwin a month or two to work, and then see how people behave.
Interestingly, with local problems like this, it's usually residents that are the worst offenders...

It's the "Still live with my parents" lot buying "pocket supercars" on tick. They all live down the crappy bit at the other end of the village. There's MILES of roads in the Lake district that are barel wide enough for two cars where you can't see more than 50 yds ahead, and these were always NSL. And having been there 2 years, it's not improved, and i'm sick of it.
The road is 6" narrower than the bus, too. If he comes the other way I have to pull in to the verge and stop.

A few years ago the approaches to villages in Dorset were changed so that there was a least a mile of 40 before coming to the 30. They are now reverting back to how it was before. If you make limits unrealistic then they will not be observed. In the case of the OP if there were no limits and nobody had a speedo what effect would it have on the majority of drivers speed?

There in lies the problem, is the early 30 limit really necessary? Early extended limits appear to be an ever increasing problem, more & more drivers can't ass'd to heed them as they are obviously not necessary, they then become blaze' about the real bits that do need them. Keep the limits short & sweet at the hazardous bits ONLY. Just my opinion but I think its a very valid one, currently its extened, lengthen & then join the whole damn lot up with a stupid limit the whole way.
