My nephew wanted to clean my car but unfortunately tried cleaning the dials with something that has left them cloudy - does anyone know how i can change the glass on the speedo in particular (i can easily get new glass or plastic cut to size). If i remove the dials is it easy to get the glass off (Not sure it is glass - could be some sort of plastic).

Not sure if it helps but I think it is glass and the old way for classics was to use jewellers rouge as a polishing agent.

Laughable as it sounds, toothpaste and elbow grease will also remove slight scuffs - was he using a scouring pad?

Good luck anyway

not sure what he used - he was very non-committal on his answers. Looks like some sort of chemical attack which makes me think they are not glass. Anyway i will have a go at polishing it out. Thanks for the quick replies.

Glass is my trade.
Cleaning fluids will not damage glass but they can make a mess of plastic.
Unless your nephew used coarse wire wool.
Depending on the age of the car more than likely plastic.
BTW when speedy cables came to my workshop to repair my speedo he took it apart i could see for myself that it was plastic.
Glass is to shiny it has to be slightly cloudy something to do with glare SC told me.
Ramble over.

What year's the car? Mine ('99) are plastic and they're clear but they're not shiny, they're kind of anti-glare finished, that's the best way I could describe them.

You're only option IMO is to send the clock to speedy.
They can fit a new piece of plastic.
Sorry no other ideas.

If they are plastic and the clouding is not due to deep scratches? polish it out with SILVO. This works fine on most hard plastics and is very quick. Brasso, t cut and others simply don't work well on plastics in the same way and some cause clouding of the surface as described.

Thanks for finding that - looks interesting - looks exactly the same as mine - but wonder why it says from 1996 onwards (mine is sept 05). I will drop a line to find out.

It is great how people really put themselves out to help on here - thanks again.
