Having had my chim (5 yr old)for two whole weeks i've lost count of how many chaps ask to look at the engine! As such I thought I should clean it up and make it look even better, so:

1. The rocker covers etc have a 5yrs worth of grime/dust/sooty oily sh*t etc what should I use to clean it off, Gunk?? soapy water?? spirits?

2. Do components like the swirl tank polish up??

3. What the feeling of ACT silicone hose kits??

4. The alternator etc has Aluminium corrosion (white dusty stuff) again, whats the best thing to clean it with??

Anyone else gone down this road??

Hammy

Nope, but I've waded out to the car before now, intent on starting this very job, only to be scared off by the same issues you mentioned.

Would appreciate any good experiences/tips to get me going too.

I have never done it, but I have seen cars that have, and I have seen them with the ACT hose kit.

I have all my Backhome 2003 photos at this location:

Beware they are large pictures.

The one I think you are interested in is DSCF108.jpg

note this is a directory of pics, so opening the link above will not bombard you with images.

FWIW (for what it's worth) I use Solvo Autosol to polish most of the ally on my Chim.

With those huge air vents in the bonnet there's no way you'll be able to keep it clean. Chimaera's are for driving, they need to look good on the outside, the oily bits have a job to do and they do it oh so well. It's like the blonde in your passenger seat. Looks good on the outside but cut her open and look inside - not good.
