A27 Brighton Bypass
Discussion
I just noticed this one, very sneaky because there's hardly any warning, and you only get that if you approach from the east... Cheeky buggers!
The Southwick tunnel is now a "Speed Check area" with a pair of cameras at both ends, plus a camera mounted on the roof at both exits, I assume it calculates your average speed through the tunnel. I also assume that Sussex Police will be letting you know exactly what that average speed was by first class mail.
Shame, that was a lovely fast tunnel, great in a proper car with the roof/windows down!

You sure that these are speed cameras? I think the signs you see coming from the east are for one of Sussex's mobile sites which is on the A27 behind the Holmbush centre. Certainly the www.sussexsafetycameras.gov.uk/sites.htm doesn't mention there being any speed cameras in the tunnel.
The sussex cameras I have seen have all been well marked, including the mobile units, but thats because so far I have always seen them!
Yeah, normally they are pretty good about marking the cameras, but these signs are new (to me anyway) and there is a cluster of cameras at either end of the tunnel, again they are new to me. I don't often go through the tunnel, but I had to head out to Worthing this afternoon and just caught the signs in time to slow down. I took a good look at the cameras as I went through and the same on the way back.
They might not be speed cameras, but they look pretty menacing, I don't trust them!

the cameras have been on the tunnel for years - they are for traffic monitoring (note the stay in lane signs etc as you enter the tunnel)
The speed check area signs have been up for about 5-6 weeks now, sussex police have been having early morning and rush hour blitz's on speeding motorists (mainly heading west from Devils Dyke towards the tunnel0 on the fast downhill. They are using Some marked Traffic Cars and also a Blue un-marked Volvo.

Chris, I certainly hope you are right! I've been known to 'exceed the speed limit slightly' going through that tunnel. Haven't had anything through the post yet?

Thanks for putting my mind at rest! You know I'd never really noticed the camera clusters before, but when I saw that sign I looked carefully. I've been out of the country for 5 years and have only been back in Brighton for a couple of months now, I'm still trying to get my bearings when it comes to speed traps.
I prefer approaching the tunnel from the west on the way back to Brighton as the fast lane tends to be much clearer, not that I would exceed the speed limit of course...

O went that way on Friday and had a look both ways! I beloeve the warning signs have been up longer than 4 or 5 weeks though!
There are camera signs westbound and they are after the tunnel. They are the sort Sussex use for mobile sites and seem to relate to the site behind the Holmbush Centre. There are signs going Eastbound to, and they seem to stop at the same location.
I am not sure where exactly the mobile site is as there are laybys, bridges so plenty of places to park the vam!
The A27 can be a fast road though, and those dark unmarked volvo's do seem to regularly have stopped people!
Edited as I can't type!

a favourite for the mobile site is literally as you exit the tunnel heading east - you can get a good run through the tunnel if the traffic is reasonable and just as you enter the tunnel heading west.
However they seem to prefer to use the traffic cars on the road round here
there are some very fast down hill sections. they hads the blue volvo on the westbound carriageway again this morning at around 9a.m which had nabbed a black 911 on the downhill run from Devils Dyke
