My wife's rushing me to buy a sat-nav before our hols to France next week! Her advice so far is "get a Tom Tom from Halfords". (She has obviously overlooked my need for endless research, dithering and penny-pinching! hehe). I presume Halfords' range is small and their prices are high! So, please can anyone recommend a suitable sat-nav model (need France maps) and suitable retailer (online is OK as long as they have a good record for fast delivery!) and good value (less than £300?!). Thanks.

TBH she is not far off the mark, Tom Tom get excellent reviews and I will be using mine next week ( tom tom one v2 europe|) for a similar journey. There are a few deals around at the mo but I got mine from Amazon in the end but only a few quid cheaper than Halfrauds.

Take a look in the sat nav forum for more info

I've got Tom Tom on a PDA and love it. One of the guys at work has just got one of these and I must say it looks pretty damn good - and contains all the european maps.

I've got a Tom Tom Go "Classic" - ie one of the very first ones - it's been fine in all respects and updates etc have been simple - note join PocketGPS for the scamera database though - much cheaper than buying the Tom Tom one...

Look into NavMan F20 Europe. Cracking piece of kit and easily as good and useable as TomTom, and a little cheaper to boot...

This one looks to be winning so far (Tom Tom GO 710) as it's got hands-free telephoning and I've found one for £223 inc VAT. Keep em coming!

Which when I was looking is why I went for a Garmin, everyone at the time was raving how much better the customer service was. Haven't needed to use it though so hopefully it is still good.

Ive had 2 (sorry 3)Tom Tom units over the years. Long story but i am now using the Tom Tom One XL. Fantastic. I did have a Tom Tom 910 with the hands free etc but it never worked very well, sent back 3 times then Halford gave me my money back !!!

have a look at the Navman products. Just seem to be bettermade than the lower end Tom Toms. Customer service is local (Gawick).

Also found that the software doesnt freeze as much as the tom tom software i have on my ipaq. Currently have a N40 that you can buy here
http://www.mynewcheap.co.uk/products/details/navma...
for £150!! Also comes complete with europe maps that i have recently used throug Spain with no issues.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Just back from Halfords, and decided on a Garmin, though not yet sure which one. Nuvi 310D seems to fit the bill - small, light, European maps etc. £250 in store, and he wouldn't be haggled, so I'm hunting the web now. If anyone can recommend an alternative supplier, that would be good...

Just found cheaper at £236 ... http://www.pentagongps.co.uk/item.do?item=90

Well spotted! I saw that one too, but selected the one from Pentagon as it was a pound cheaper! Hadn't realised it offered something extra, and not really sure what that extra is - "Traffic Module"?! Surely that's the same as the "Traffic Receiver" in the other deal? Also, it states that the Europe map is on DVD. I assumed it'd be already loaded. Do they usually come pre-loaded?? I knew this game would end up with me getting information overload! Groan! hehe

You get the DVD too, incase you need to reload it, also you can do stuff on your PC with it.

Just seen a deal on a Garmin 350... http://www.mynewcheap.co.uk/products/details/garmi...

Looks to be identical to the 310D! But a bit cheaper here at £211. This choice just gets worse!
