Hi Guys and Girls,

Was caught again..! on the telephone, I am so going to have to buy a Bluetooth ear dongle thing.

Rather embarrassing this time centre of London sat at a red light and the bobby simply tapped on the window of the car! DOH! I was obviously in danger of killing someone whilst he was able to tap on my window... but that is just me being bitter.

Anyway the real problem I need your chaps help with is that I went to the police station to hand in my driving licence to get my prizes and they would not accept my documents. The reason being I was 1 day late in handing them in..! Because of this they are now raising me a court summons, ridiculously the summons would not have even been drawn up when I was in the cop shop as it was a weekend and I was only 1 day late!!!!!

What do I do now; will I really need to go to court just because I was a few hours late in handing in my doc's?? It all seems a little OTT...

Thanks for your help!

Tom.

What happened in the preceding 7 days before you tried to hand in your documents?

My own fault again, I was just very busy at work and did not have time in the evening what was left of it by the time I finished work.

It took me a while to get the works insurance certificate sent to me with the postal strikes, meant a couple of days delay.

Enough said, i'm afraid they are completely right to take the action they have done. You had no reason NOT to take the documents in within the 7 days.

When I was done for speeding the nice TrafPol said that he'd overlook it if I was late with the producer as I was on my way to go on holiday. As it was I managed to get the docs posted to me so I didn't end up relying on that.

It's harsh on you, but fair in the eyes of the law I guess. It's hardly fair morally, but many motoring laws are like that. Bah.

7 days, to go, what 10 mins down the road with documents that are a legal requirement?

Don't think it's that harsh

I'm not arguing that it shouldn't have been made more of a priority by the OP (I don't think even the OP is arguing that), but having to go to court because he's a day late seems a bit OTT and a waste of money, that's all. I don't think the OP was taking the piss and a bit of leniancy might have been reasonable.

In all, it's extra bother that could have been easily avoided but not worth losing too much sleep over (unless it led to extra points and a ban through totting-up frown - which would definitely be harsh IMHO).

What's the alternative to going to court? I'd imagine a large proportion of those who are late producing do so because they don't have the required!

what are the penalties for not producing in time (but all documents, insurance licence etc are in order)?

This is a very fair point and probably very true, but I have (had) a clean driving licence both paper and counterpart in addition to a valid insurance certificate sat on the reception desk of the Police station on Sunday Morning.

I am just amazed that they could not just fax it through to where ever it needed to go to so on Monday morning when the bods went to work there it was and no further action was required...!

I am not arguing the charge I have even paid the fine already! I am just amazed at the OTT action that has been taken! I cannot be the only one who has forgotten, or not had time to take in their documents within the 7 days...

You'd think in this age of technology they'd be able to get the information they need via roadside PNC/ DVLA checks.

I would assume they still filled in the HO/RT2 form with the details of your documents for the issuing officer? That would be unusual if they didn't - its just they have to highlight that they were produced late. If they have done, and all is in order, its very unusual for the officer to bother with any failing to produce offences - especially if you are accepting the offer. That'd just be paperwork for the sake of it.

In terms of them not accepting the licence give the ticket & summons unit a bell and quote the ticket number. I'd be very surprised if they didn't still accept your licence for endorsement given you are within the 28 days for accepting the conditional offer. I know our unit accepts them for the full 28 days to save court and paperwork time.

Insurance database still does not include all insurance companies, so production of the certificate is a must. Though if I can confirm it at the roadside with a check of the database or a call to the insurance company I don't ask for it to be produced. Driving Licence database is very accurate (obviously subject to people updating their addresses, etc.) but the licence itself is needed for endorsement.

They can.

I got stopped and fined in Devon earlier in the year.

From name date/place of birth, reg and address they confirmed the car was taxed, insured, MOT'd and that I had a valid driving licence all over the radio.

No producer required. Which is handy as I dont have an actual physical licence laugh

Thanks this is exactly what I am after, I don't really want to go to court especially over something so silly as this... Do you have the Ticket & Summons number? There are no telephone numbers on the ticket that I have been issued!

You have all been very helpful thanks very much!

Agreed.

On both occasions I have been given a producer, my details were 'radioed through' to check that what i was saying was true. Still had to bring my documents though...

I was a day late on a producer which stemmed from an offence incurred on the way back from a restaurant one evening.

The court refused to take into account the fact that I had had serious food poisoning from the aforementioned restaurant and didn't even know what day it was by the time I was feeling well enough to take in the docs.....

Juat accept the fact that you'll be stitched up and get on with your life.....

Considering that my local police station keeps roughly the same hours as the ticket office at my local railway station (perhaps they could combine the two functions? ... and add in a Post Office and library), and I don't work locally, I'd have to nominate a police station near to my work place. My work place can vary on a day-to-day basis (including outside UK). Checking the Internet for opening hours of police stations near to where I was working a couple of weeks ago shows that they too keep 'railway ticket-office' hours. I'd suggest that producing documents in time is not as easy for everyone as it once was - Streaky

Yep,agree here. Our local nick closed and the nearest one is 1/2hr drive away and I'm not sure what hours they keep.Like you I don't know where I'll be working day to day. It's not as simple as some people make out is it.You'd have thought that all the computerisation would have sounded the death knell for paperwork but hey-ho..........

I got a session in court AND an extra point on top of the 3 I won for speeding for handing my docs in late......on a trumped up 42 in a 30 that I'm not bitter about in the least(15 years on) furious
