My S5 is killing me on Fuel Consumption. I don;t have the actual figure, but for potter around London £50 is lasting about 3 days. Its far worse than my M3's and far worse then my 360.

Someone told me its because its a new car and i need to wait for it to settle down after about 2000 miles. Is this true ?

Well, im not surprised its worse than the M3 - your comparing a 4.2 V8 with a 3.2 6-cylinder...

as for the 360, I cant comment - unless your S5 is an auto?

Audi engines take up to 10k to loosen up and then the mpg should increase. (Should have bought the 3.0TDi and chipped it!!) wink

How many miles per tank full is that then, if its 220 then that would be high teens and about right considering 4.2,350 bhp? What would a TVR Griffith have done.

Can't help on the S5 but my RS6 used to do about 300 miles to £60-£70. MPG between 16-22. The car should tell you the MPG smile

Dave,
I can't see an RS6 being any more thirsty than an S5. Both are torquey V8s but I would have thought as the S5 is a lighter car,non-turbo and tuned more for low down torque (than the RS4 engine) it should be a touch better.
Did yours improve with running-in, if so what sort of miles?

Can't really comment it was two years old when I got my hands on it.

(have to say not heard of MPG getting better as the car gets older)

Sorry

Stimmers,
Whats it actually doing then, how many miles are you getting for your £50 worth?

I've got a 2004 A8 4.2 and around very central London I get around 12mpg, in suburban London I get high teens and on the open road I get 24-30 depending on how I drive it. Mine's got 42k miles so it's run in, but Audi engines are pretty inefficient in my experience compared to BMWs. I used to frquently borrow an E39 M5 and I found it more economical than my current drive, despite being more of a performance engine, and having a greater capacity.

An M3 should be even better. I averaged 26 in all conditions in these.

In real life driving (bit of motorway, bit of A road) I get around an average of 19mpg out of the RS4...a lot less if driving in a 'more spirited' fashion...

Haven't noticed any improvement since loosening up.....if anything it's got worse as I can make the loud peddle properly aquainted with the floor for longer! cloud9

Acually just tried to find the average mpg in the computer and can't find it. I'll have to have a better look.

Needless to say, my tank is pretty empty again. How much more would an RS5 drink over an S5, as i might cancel my order

Just click the right handstalk button through the displays until it reads MPG 1.
No doubt you have it set to read digital speed, then a couple of clicks will show it.

Post Service I got 30 MPG out of the S8 yesterday on a run down to Thruxton. Ok traffic meant I was going along at 50-60 but I was still pleased with that. 1998 example with 72k on the clock.

WOW that is bad....

The RS would do around that when it was cold but would rise up to about 19mpg after about 5 mins.

It might be worth taking it out to one of the motorways and see what it does on a run.

12 mpg is hyper car stuff frown

Assuming you don't drive it flat out all the time I would suggest there is something amiss with your engine. Call the dealership or Audi Customer Service as this is not a very good advert for S5s.
Tell them the official mpg is quoted for Urban at 15.9 and combined is 22.
If 12 mpg average is for real then I don't want one and I think a lot will be put off.

But London rush-hour driving is NOT urban, it's car park driving.

Stimmer ought to tell us more about what sort of driving he is doing as he just said "....potter around London". If its rush hour crawl then it should be like other similiarly equipped Audis: S4,RS4,S8s are getting whereas they seem to be doing beeter.
As suggested he ought to take it on the M4 when its quiet and see what it does.
