Just popping over from the TVR forum, where our cars reputation for reliability must make you all green with envy!

My wife bought one of your Freelanders, the petrol version. After 7,000 miles it's on its second engine, because its cylinder liners started going up and down in a way that they probably shouldn't. It is a 2002 model, which the dealer and the press led us to believe had been improved by BMW.

We're now waiting for a TD4 in exchange, with the German engine, at a premium of £2700 they reckon. With a price difference of £1200 new, why would a 4 month old second hand diesel be worth £2700 more than a 6 month old ex-demo petrol? But apparently there isn't a design fault.

No doubt because, with almost no exceptions, diesel engined vehicles retain their value better than petrol engined vehicles in the early years. Especially so with 4x4s.

You realise it may only be a question of time before someone says that a Freelander isn't a "proper" Land Rover anyway

No - Land Rover, like yours. It certainly isn't a Toyota, not in terms of build quality or reliability.

She got the replacement today. £2300 extra for an identical TD4 Auto over a Petrol manual. That was more like it.

JD Power questionnaire arrived on doormat this morning too! Expect a fairly low score.

Sorry. Just sacked Webshots, it's on Fotango now...

That old tank in front didn't half slow the missus down around the off-road course.
