Goodwood Festival of Speed

Going to go to Goodwood in July and was wondering if anyone knows some good roads to travel down on from North London.

Well, if you come from the M25 then it J10 to Guildford, then A3, then turn off to Petworth, go through Petworth then end up in Chichester!

About 20 miles of lovely roads but not too many overtaking spots and watch out for the single lane bridge!

Never been to Goodwood before.

I can't go on the Sunday.....is it worth a trip up on the Saturday, or does all the action happen Sunday?

I was wondering about the Friday or Saturday as well. I think the hill climb practice runs go on on those days so you might not miss anything other than the final times.

Go any day. Personally I prefer the Friday, as it used to be quieter (once upon a time) and you got to see more of the cars, than of people's heads!

Sunday is the day when everyone pushes that little bit harder because they know the hill better, and it matters less if they have a mechanical problem or make a small mistake. It can be crowded, but it's worth it IMO. I've been every year so far. It has changed enormously since the first one in '93 - not all for the best, but unfortunately that is unavoidable given the popularity and success of the event. Nowadays we get a grandstand seat because the bales are much higher and the ropes further away from the track, and visiblity is not as good trackside. It seems unbelievable now, but for the first couple of years, you could sit on the straw bales along the paddock side of the track. Of course, they have had a few crashes since then.

Rather than turn off the A3 at Guildford continue on through Hindhead (always a slight bottle neck at the traffic lights here) and at Petersfield use the B2146 to Chichester. The B road is a blast - newly resurfaced in many sections and it twists and turns through some beautiful countryside on the way into Chichester.

Prefer the atmosphere of a Sunday but there really is not that much difference.

If you are still considering........dont! Just book it

Going on the Fri, mainly hoping that it won't be as packed as the w/e so will be able to see more of the cars etc. First time so can't wait !!

I am going on the Sunday for the first time and can't wait.

I am staying with relatives nearby on the Saturday night so can get there early on Sunday without having to get up in the early hours.

I was goung to take the Elise but my old man can't fit into it so going in his car instead. Not too much of a disapointment as it's a Ferrari

What's the form with the Grandstand. Do you need to book tickets in advance or can you buy them on the day?

Cheers for all that everyone. We (brother in his griff too) are going down on the Saturday to catch the afternoon, then all day Sunday. Thinking of staying somewhere in the vicinity ie Chichester or closer. Any one know of any good places to stay too ?

We went last year for the Sunday and are going for Saturday and Sunday this year. Hopefully we'll be taking our Chim - the pregnant wife can still just about get in and out of it!

We've got chums close by so will be staying with them.

Thats going to be a busy weekend. I've got a day at Brands Hatch on the Thursday with some clients, Goodwood, the Essex meet and the Keevil Tuscan day on the Monday.
