What size rear tyres for a 17" x 7j wheel ???

7 inch at the rear sounds a bit narrow to me. Think the originals were 16x7.5 and that was not really wide enough for the 245 rears, As you come down in profile the match between tyre and rim width is more important. Really for 245s on 17 rims they should be 8 or ideally 8.5 wide.

Take a look at one of the tyre suppliers web sites and you will find the optimum and acceptable rim sizes for each tyre.

Just checked what I have :-

225 x 40 Front 245 x 40 rear. Not a lot of help as the fronts are 7.5 and the rears 8 inch.

A 235 width tyre is about all you should go up to on a 7j rim.
