I don't know about zinc plating, but a cheap way of improving the nuts without the expense of buying stainless ones from Shinynuts is simple plastic covers available from Peugot

I bought a set of Ford alloy-wheel nuts on ebay for a tenner, they came with stainless covers that are nice and bright...
