I was just wondering if anyone knew which universities are the most reputable when it comes to gaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering? I'm going to be taking a degree in it starting in 2008 and was just wondering if any of you out there would recommend any universities they've either heard about or been too. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

aside from cambridge (1) loughborough has a good image and you can do a few variations on the theme (automotive engineering).

my mate went to loughborough
my cousin went to liverpool (the proper one) she know works for an OE car part manufacture i think she specialised a bit in materials..

i think you're nuts. do law or a broad business degree..! wink

Another one here for loughborough, quite a few of the engineers i work with did their 'spanner' degrees there.
Seems well respected.

I personally wouldn't go for Loughborough, they're too sports-oriented for my liking.

My own choice would be Sheffield Uni / Hallam Uni, or Coventry.

You have to weigh up how good the course is, to how good the city is.

When i did my M.Eng, Shefield won easily. Its a fantastic place to 'unify' yourself...

thumbup

Remember, aswell as a straight MEng course, theres now lots and lots of interesting variations on engineering you can do.

Imperial College, London - undoubtedly one of the top 5 universities in the world for engineering. Great fun being a student in London if you can stomach the high accommodation costs.

Another vote for loughborough here- great uni and the engineering dept is fantastic!

As for it being sports-orientated, yes, it is, but its not as if the lecturers dissapear mid-tutorial to do a lap of the track...

the social scene is great and you have the opportunity to be as active as you want- you could even start up a p'heads karting club. I also believe they have a formula student team - if your a big p'header that would be WELL worth doing.

As the saying in lboro goes- "GET INVOLVED!"

Second that .. i didn't do MEng, but spent a year there as a postgrad & it's definitely an inspiring place to study & hang-out (albeit with he usual % of total nerds!); pretty hard to get into nowadays though.

Another vote for Loughborough from me. I graduated with a MEng in Mech Eng in 2004. Cant fault the course, and the place, though small, is very good socially. Sporting facilities are world class, so if you're good at sports thats a bonus.

I know several large engineering companies (and the utility company that i work for) who go to Lboro first when they are looking for engineering grads.

I went to Oxford Brookes for their Automotive Engineering BEng.
Was a very good course and they have an excellent Formual Student team (although don't know what they're upto nowadays).
I quit uni because I realised it wasn't for me, but the course was excellent.
Went to look at Coventry as well and their courses were very good (especially if you weren't such a bright student and perhaps wouldn't be able to make CEng, they had courses available at that level of study).
Both very good and obviously a big appeal of uni is where you are, in that for me, Oxford won hands down.
Hope that helps smile

another thoght - but i have no knowledge.. is my local Poly in sHatfield... 'the university of hertfordshire' have the more motorsport orientated course. whilst i suspect it's not in the same league as the others for being a mathematical spod it may be a good option if that's the direction you wanted to go in (especially seeing as they seem to be masters of self-publicity!).

I would certainly give a vote for Loughborough. I know friends who did their MEng/BEng at different universities but none seemed as well supported as myself at Loughborough. They have a good level of staff and a decent amount of equipment to actually get your hands on rather than just read about.

I started on a BEng at Loughborough in 2000, then did my masters here and now a PhD. They've certainly been very good to me and of my mates here, none have struggled to find work afterwards as the university is well respected, with good ties to industry.

Though, I’m always going to be bias as I’m in the prospectus lol.

Id.

P.S. There is a lot of sport and Rag type activities but no one forces you to take part. If your not sporty, you'll still get a lot out of the university. I'm not sporty but still found plenty of things here to keep me happy.

I went to Strathclyde, it is rated quite highly for engineering.

Can I point out though, if you are smart enough to gain an MEng, you are smart enough to enter a lot of other professions that will pay you a SHED LOAD more money.

The engineering courses at Brunel were well regarded with I studied there. Shame it's in Uxbridge & at the time there was a scarcity of women
