I'm very close on ordering one of these to replace my M3 as i require an estate. Does anybody on here either own one or perhaps driven one, if so do you have any veiws to share.

I'm going for the manual, but nobody else seems too. BMW tell me there is only one manual in the Country.

One of the EVO magazine guys is running one as a long term tester at the moment. He seems to rate it.

I couldn't get a drive in a manual either but, based on the drive of an auto, immediately placed an order for a 335i Sport Touring (manual)

It arrives in mid September

What do you want to know?

I took out the a 535 d auto out for a dive yesterday and just didnt like the flappy paddles at all. Its a very capable car i just couldnt live with that overall loss of control. Anyway there appear to be so few manuals around i was perhaps thinking that there was something i was just not getting.

A seach on the BMW used car locator only comes up with automatics not a single manual for sale. Do you think it will depreciate quicker than an auto due to the fact i wont be able to sell it on or will it be unique.?Im hoping the latter.

If i spec to say £42,000 . What sort of discount of list should i be after / i was thinking about 8 %.

535d is only available as an auto (as is the 335d)

The 335i I drove (even with the flappy paddles) was awesome but I share your feelings about loss of control - hence mine being a manual

there are a couple of manual 335i owners on here (rochesterbmw certainly is)

A good friend of mine works for a BMW company and gets a new BMW every 3 months, he has had a number of 335D's and one 335i. He said the 335i is not a patch on the 335d, which is much more suited to the Touring brief, better on the road by some margin and much nicer to drive as a whole. He says it is quicker in most situations for less effort, and is the one he would choose everytime.

Not my opinion but his, as I have not driven them at length to form an honest opinion.

I drove both before choosing the 335i

why?

because of the noise, the manual gearbox and, I believe, the superior feel and performance of the petrol

each to thier own I guess

mine's a company car so cost of servicing/fuel/depreciation were largely irrelevant

also, the petrol twin turbo was recently voted 'engine of the year' which, sad as the title sounds, doesn't suggest that the '335i isn't a patch on the 335d'

As I stated, his opinion, and based on running them for at least 3 months, and the diesels for longer. He was talking as a whole, but each to their own.

I have had the 535d DMS tuned and the 335i and the petrol beats the diesel 95% of the time imho. Also I managed 25.9mpg from the 535d over 8 months and 20k miles, and got 26mpg from the 335i, even with the Xede fitted it returned 25+ easily.

I went from an M3 CSL and once the xede was fitted the 335i was the faster car, it was seriously quick, but very refined, if I were to do it again I would get an Alpina B3 though.

Everybody has an opinion.

My 335d returns over 40mpg (most of my driving is motorway where it averages 48+mpg).

It has been remapped so is probably quicker in most scenarios than the M3 CSL.

From a residual point of view it will hold its value better than the petrol equivalent.

The flappy paddles aren't perfect and do take a fair few miles to adjust to.......like most things practice makes perfect. The auto box is an absolute peach and suits the diesel perfectly. I came from Cerbera (2 of them and a tuned S4 before that) and was eering towards the maunal petrol version, but after testing both (as std) the diesel was by far the better car and quicker in most situations (except from a standing start maybe). Yes it sounds clattery, and yes it only revs to 5000rpm, but the way it delivers its power and torque over such a short range is superb.

Mine is also a company hack and will prove to be the much better cost option than the petrol under the circumstances and miles that I cover.

Jules.

must confess, I was a little confused by that response as well!

no question, a manual petrol will take a bigger hit on residuals

if it were my own cash going on buying (or fuelling) then I'd think harder about the auto/manual and petrol/diesel question

as it's not my cash, it's a no brainer - manual+petrol=more smiles per mile IMO

Thanks for the replies. Ive just had too take a £10,000 in two years hit on my M3 to sell it privately. Whilst i really want the petrol / manual im just really concerned about my ability to sell it in 3 years time . Nobody really seems to be going for it at the moment.
All the petrols i can find have auto boxes. One thing that frustrated me about the diesel was that it had very little range to rev. Is the auto petrol more satisfying ? Has anybody driven both the petrol and the diesal with auto boxes, if so your thought please.
Do you agree that residues are much likely to be stronger on the diesal .

If you dont have the storage pack whats under the rear carpet were the spare would be if it had one ?
