Hi all.

Any ideas what this problem is that I have got. My 4.0l Chim has started making a really annoying ticking noise coming from the engine. It has only just started since I sprayed the engine with a degreaser / cleaner. If I'm driving it, it sounds louder inside the car and seems to be worse at lower revs. Its done 36k and been v. well maintained / serviced / driven. Ive just advertised it and there ent no way I'm gunna sell with this noise - any ideas greatly appreciated?

This is usually caused by one of the manifold gaskets having failed.

Agreed - manifold gaskets..

You can confirm this easily..

Start the car from cold.. have a friend hold some rags over the exhausts..

Does the noise increase under the bonnet .. you can wave a hand near the head / exhaust joint .. but be careful (hence doing this when cold..).

It could be a small stone trapped in the grooves on the Fan Belt. Happened to my car.

Could be a sticky hydraulic lifter......mine is a 97 Chim with 31k miles and it does it on mine but the ticking comes and goes! It was inspected by Leven's when I bought it and they reckoned it was a sticky lifter in the right bank and as long as it doesn't tick permanently then it shouldn't be a major problem but worth getting it checked out yes Would also rule out the exhaust manifold gasket first. Scan for HT arcing (in the dark) shouldn't be discounted, and a nice easy fix wink

Had this on mine which was the belt tensioner bearings, sounded just like one of the lifters not priming. Pop the belt off and see if the noise goes.

Sometimes it's the exhaust split at the head

I had the HT coil arcing, that causes loud ticking

Changing coil improved it but didn't cure it completely, also had to change HT leads & spark plug extenders/heat sheilds to cure completley

If it needs doing get it to Matt at Sebring. £100 for one bank or £175 for both. He did mine a treat.
