Working yesterday in Leeds, I parked outside the contributors house and later came out to find that I was parked in a residents bay. Normally these things are pretty easy to spot, but honestly I didn't think there was anything different about this street, especially it being in a quiet part of Leeds a mile or two away from the city centre.

So I've got a ticket, and I wondered if there was any way out of it, incorrect markings, poor signage, etc.

Heres some pics:

The sign above is repeated on lamp posts up the street. Every other residents parking zone I've ever seen has had a large blue background sign that makes it very easy to spot. I honestly didn't see this. The yellow biscuit signs are easy to spot but there weren't any of those either. I didn't see any signage on entering the parking zone, it looked like a perfectly normal road. And the markings on the road didn't worry me either since its common practice where I live to do this, so subconciously I just assumed that Leeds had done this too.

Really bloody annoying this, I've never had a parking ticket before and now some shiny helmetted tosser wants to tax me for £30 (£60 if not within 14 days).

Think you'll end up paying - but you should report the severed leg that's been left in the gutter

Whats the deal if a house owner calls out the plumber, or wants to have Sky installed etc, can tradesmen park in a residents bay?

I think residents can purchase (or are allocated) what look like scratch cards which can be used for a limited time.

No use now, but may be of use in the future... Around my way residents parking bays are painted as one continuous bay, as in second picture of the original post. Pay and display bays are painted as single car space bays, i.e. like the second picture but with lines breaking the bay into separate car sized bays.

Knowing this has helped me out a lot because we have roads where there are residents parking and pay and display all mixed together and trying to figure what's what from the signs is near impossible (probably done on purpose!). Knowing which bay is which from the painted lines is the only safe way to go.

I hate residents parking, if it bothers them that much, buy a house with a drive!

There are areas of Sheffield where such schemes have been imposed upon residents, despite their lack of desire for same. Again in our wonderful kleptocracy it's all about the revenue.

Just pay it, £30 is peanuts compared with the parking fines we get down here.

The signs in the pictures are the normal ones and I have never seen anything any different you should check before leaving the vehicle.

Some of us have residents parking bays forced on us.

Be not afraid of resident's parking, some move into a street with resident's parking, some demand the Council install resident's parking, while others have resident's parking thrust upon them.

With apologies to William Shakespeare ("Twelfth Night", Act 2, Scene 5)

Parking has just been decriminalised in Leamington Spa. Many residents have got drives but they're forced to have parking outside and permits, and then people can park across them. I don't understand how this can be, but there's letters in the paper about it.

Thanks for the help. Really pisses me off that for parking my car while working, not blocking any traffic (or residents for that matter, hardly any cars on that street all day), I get fined £30 or £60 after 14 days.

Presumably the reason there are hardly any cars is because of the parking restriction. Without the residents only parking restriction it would probably be full of workers or shoppers cars and the residents wouldn't be able to park.
