I've got a court summons for tuesday, going to appear, as i've been advised that magistrates prefer to see the defendant in person.

It's for a speeding offence (surprised it hasn't happened sooner, licence is clean at the mo!) Got caught by some git of a BIB hiding behind a hedge with an LTI 20/20 doing 74 in a 50 zone. They did send me some lovely pics of me car tho!

Anyway, i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what so say/do/wear or what not to!??

If you're not going to contest it, I doubt it makes any difference to be honest, although swearing at the magistrate is probably a bad idea.

Dress like a chav and your fine will be £20 payable in 25 weekly instalments.

Turn up in a tracksuit, unwashed and unshaven, socks tucked into your trousers. Turn up late, speak in one word answers, give the beak attitude. Tell them you are on benefits.

They will assume that you have no cash and therefore let you off.

Do NOT do what I do and wear a £600 suit and be polite as they will arse rape you.

Have you already put in your plea ?
In my case they asked for this prior to the hearing by post- you'll get a reduced fine - 'if' you're found guilty that is. I pleaded guilty and my fine was reduced from £700 to £500 in light of the early plea.

I think the recommendation is for points and a fine at that speed. The fine is income dependent I had a genuine sob story and 'sympathetic' magistrates so they were lenient and gave me a penalty that wouldn't really affect me (30 day ban when I was going to be overseas, ban is not relevant in the other country).

I think I got the biggest fine they can give, and I stated my income was £20k - I don't know your circumstances. Quite a humbling experience going court suited and booted, surrounded by petty criminals in tracksuits, baseball caps - and to top it all they all had legal assistance.

As a law abiding tax payer I am not entitled to the same.
I got a letter written by a friend who is a solicitor to give to the magistrate- I'd suggest you do the same, be very humble...
Just advice I was given.

Oh yes - good luck, hope you don't get too badly shafted

Just wear a smart suit, shirt and tie and be polite and speak proper smile

As another said it looks like a simple SP30 so 3 points and £60(?) fine.

Wear a nice suit and tie. Be polite. Let the wally in charge know that you feel you've let a lot of people down by speeding and regret doing it, possibly ask if you might be sent on a speed awareness course to reduce the punishment?

Or turn up naked and see what happens when you claim your insane?....(thats how it works n Hollywood right?)

Presumably you were pulled over by the BiB..

Any idea why you have been summonsed, rather than the matter being dealt with by Fixed Penalty ?

74 in a 50 zone is almost 50% above the limit, I guess the BIB didn't think a fixed penalty was appropriate.

Good point DVD.

On the other hand it might have been one of those tax raising 50 limits that used to be NSL, and have been dropped for no logical reason other than ££££.
74 in (what should be) a 60 doesn't sound quite so bad.

not blaming plod per say, just think them hiding behind hedges on clear straight roads is rather sneaky and underhand. fund raising as opposed to rational, purposeful policing.

LOL! If you were 'law abiding' you would not be up in court with a guilty plea!

Totally agree with your post though it does seem one rule for the great unwashed and one for the rest of us,

Was watching traffic cops on BBC the other night and some typical scum pond life chav stole a car, no licence, no insurance, has a chase with BIB with no thought for others, crashes stolen car into other cars, decamps and legs it, gives it loads of attitude and kicks off with the BIB when captured, what did he get

I was literally screaming at the TV.

Interesting concept. Do you recommend putting them in the pockets, in the waistband, or elsewhere? jester

Dammit - thought I'd got away with it!!

To the OP, suffice it to say, wear a suit - you will be the best dressed person there, and they will fine you accordingly.

There is no "Justice" in the CJS anymore.

Yup, wear a suit and when you arrive at court the security guards at the entrance will think you're actually defending someone rather than the one about to be abused.

Speaking from personal experience.
