I received a NIP for doing 37 in a 30 zone. I wasn't sure if I was driving the car or my brother, so I requested the photographic evidence to find out out. This duly arrived this morning, and was a rear shot. Imagine my surprise when no more tha 20 metres in front of my car on the photo, there is a 40MPH speed limit sign. So my question is when does the speed limit click in, when the sign is visible, or when you cross past it ?

On the grounds that you have been alleged of exceeding the speed limit BEFORE you reached the sign, what do you reckon ?

Sometimes I wonder, yikes What hope is there to improve safety on the roads when crazy questions like this are asked by someone who has a license. I really hope this is a wind up

Thanks for you're helpful advice Topton, why bother with a snide comment if you're not gonna answer the question. I have had my license for 20+ years, and got it in a foreign country. I only emigrated to the UK for very long, hence me asking advice on here. But thanx for your assistance anyway.

So you don't have a UK licence?

I'm interested now...did you have to sit a UK test or just do a "swap"?Where was your original licence issued?

It was issued in South Africa, and I didn't have to do any form of a test, I just exchanged it for a nominal fee

I have browsed thru it, although to be honest the part about when s speed limit sign comes into affect never caught my attention. So based on the comments I've received I would assume its best to accept my fate

Well doesn't that about explain everything!

The daughter of a friend passed her test in Kenya about 3 months ago. The test consisted of, driving 3-400metres, avoiding pot holes and then stopping. Congratulations you have passed. She can now legally drive in this country with that license. Frightening!!. Needless to say, because she is close friend I will be giving her some lessons on our roads before she is let loose

Topton you're an idiot. Have you ever been to South Africa ? The distance between the 2 countries is probably more than 3000 miles. I'm sure if I asked you various questions on British Law or the European constitution you would know very few of them, even the ones that relate to your everday life.

But if I'm driving in a foreign country I make an effort to understand the rules of the road.....for my own safety if nothing else....
