SCIENTISTS SNAP UP CAMERA CASH BOOST
Be the first reader to comment on this story

BUSINESS REPORTER

10:30 - 15 August 2007

A team of scientists has received a six-figure cash injection to develop a product which tackles global warming and congestion.

Vehicle Occupancy has secured £200,000 from Avingtrans for dtect - an infrared imaging system which counts the number of people in moving road vehicles.

The cash, for a seven per cent stake in the company, will be used to help take dtect into a commercial arena and launch the product across the world.

The firm, a Loughborough University spin-off company, has already attracted massive interest from countries across the world for the product.

Tim Ballantyne, business development manager for the company, said: "This funding allows us to take the technology forward and into production.

"Our aim is to launch our product at the end of the year.

"We have already had worldwide interest for dtect from countries such as the US, Asia and Canada and it was also well received at the recent Traffex 2007.

"Currently there is no reliable way of counting people in the car and our technology allows this to happen which reduces congestion and helps lower carbon emissions as it encourages car sharing."

The system works by illuminating the windscreen of a car and taking two digital infrared pictures.

It has a variety of uses which include enforcing congestion charging and road tolling.

The product is housed within a unit and can be installed at the roadside - like a speed camera - or on a pole.

Company founder Dr John Tyrer said: "Avingtrans investment is an excellent opportunity to bring dtect to the market after five years of product development.

"Traffic congestion is costing countries billions of pounds.

"Our product will provide road planners and toll operators with the ability to manage traffic flows."

Ken Baker OBE, who is the chairman of Avingtrans, has also become the chairman of Vehicle Occupancy.

He said: "The use of vehicle occupancy detection systems has been widely acknowledged as a major instrument in the future of worldwide traffic management. Vehicle Occupancy is at the forefront of this technology and we are delighted to have acquired a seven per cent interest and a long-term exclusive supply agreement at this stage."

As it's IR-based, presumably corpses in hearses won't be counted, and neither will blow-up dolls - Streaky

Will this work with heat reflective windscreens?

What about a small person (child?) sat behind the driver? How the hell can I prove I had somebody in a child seat when there's no way they'll show on a photo of the front of the car? Doesn't seem very fair to me....and is a major failing point of this proposed "solution" IMHO.

Also - can this system be fooled by having a large dog in the car? Or even some sort of "heated" blow up doll?

Yeh, might be uncomfortable but just wack the heat up to max! or get a portable radiator that plugs into the ciggy lighter. Get the car up to a nice 37 degrees and the car will look packed with people!

hehe

The HOV lanes or Car Pool lanes tend to work quite well in California. They have fairly substantial fines ($300+) for using them without the correct number of passengers but rely in CHiPs to enforce them, which is great because when they pull you over you can show them the child hidden in the back.
I think they tried cameras but they were fooled by blow-up people (like that autopilot in Airplane).

We need to understand the ramifications of this.

Such systems are not simply going to be simply rolled out; they will be used in conjunction with HOV lanes. HOV lanes don’t grow on trees, chances are existing lanes will be reserved for it. Doing so could actually increase congestion (like the M4 bus lane), to the point where lone drivers will be frustrated enough to risk using the enforced lanes.

This parallels with the enforcement of unreasonably low speed limits.

just remove number plates, although I suspect as soon as cameras enforce everyhting, they will bring back the death penalty for driving without plates on.

Ah you mean like the "Tony Blair" lane on the M4? (does it still exist?)

That was on the Beltway around Washington, DC. An intern looking through images remarked that there seemed to be a lot of luscious-lipped female opera singers in Washington smile - Streaky

Surely it will be easy enogh to create a blow up doll which has a small heated blowerr inside which will keep the doll warm so it can give a heat signature like a person, and as for making it look realistic you could go as far as making a clone of yourself easy enough as seen in many films.

Heat reflective windscreens would be interesting as others say. If they cant get round it, then that will become a lucrative business coating windscreens.

Just always have a "passenger" in a rear seat behind the driver, if it is realistic enough it would be hard to tell just from the bit of hair you can see round the drivers head.

my car has a heated front screen, surely that would f**k up a heat reading inside the car?

if not I will make a large two fingered gesture out of copper pipe and plumb it in to the cars cooling system then all their infra red cameras will see is a massive red hot V sign laugh

Or not, as in such as case, it's likely the accused will be a Conservative politician ... who will be a member of the same Lodge as the Magistrate wink - Streaky
