Hi,
Dilemma time:
Rebuild Rover 3.9 V8 versus fit Thor 4.0

The 3.9 engine I have at the moment probably needs a new set of piston rings as it is burning oil (not the heads as I fitted new ACR ones about fourteen months ago). This 3.9 is running SU carbs and other than needing the rings doing is a good, sound engine.

BUT

I've been offered a 4.0 Thor V8 out of a Discovery 2 which I hope should be fit and forget.

Questions:
Can the Thor V8 be fitted in a similar manner as the older 14CUX engines - i.e. provide speed signal, ignition and power etc and off you go, or is there more to it than that?

What is a reasonable price for a Thor V8?

Are parts like injectors and airflow meter for the Motronic system very expensive to replace?

Cant answer how you would get the oem thor engine working, but you could megasquirt it Or, perhaps use a old 14cux injection system on it - would require dizzy (and therefore an old front timing cover) and also the fuel rail would need converting to a "returned" system with a regulator (thor is dead-headed).

IMO the 3.9 are the stronger engine. They seem to run forever or there about. Where some 4.0 temds to have problems with the liners moving. I would say it is up to you as to what you want and how much you want to spend. You might never have a liner problem but on the other hand it would be sods law for it to go after you have the engine in.
