Mk4 2.6 v6 4motion.....buying tips......
Discussion
I've run 2 of these, the current one I've had for 4.5 years and 70k miles.
1. Cooling fans fail regularly. When you view, put the ac on auto and watch the cooling fans. They should run on slow speed all the time. If they run fast for 10-20 secs, then stop for a while and then start again the internal resistor is blown. There is a modification to wire in a couple of resistors mounted on aluminium plate to repair permanently for £50. The VW fix is around £400 to supply and fit new fans so get something taken off the price if they're faulty. This is an engine you don't want to cook.
2. Services are 10k oil change, 20k full service with plugs at 40k. Haldex oil and filter should be changed at a minimum every 40k. 20k is ideal though. Be wary of if this has been neglected as it's NOT part of the 40k service and must be done seperately.
3. Suspension bushes wear out due to it being a heavy car.
4. They've worth feck all these days so you can make a silly offer - not many people want them.

thanks for info, the one i'm looking this........... asking £4325
Make: Volkswagen
Description: Golf 2.8 V6 4Motion
Year & plate: 2000 W Reg
Mileage: 110,000
3 Door Metallic Blue.
Full VW Main Dealer Service History, was last serviced in April 2007 at a VW dealer
The mileage currently sits just below 110K
All of the common faults that come with the V6 have been rectified (ABS sensor, Coolant Sensor, Warm Climate Control)
The car comes with climate contol which has been regassed and is now ice cold.
The car comes with complete black leather interior which is an added luxury as a lot do not come with this. Seats and especially bolsters and interior are in immaculate condition.
It is Taxed and MOT'd
The car has been scanned with the VW diagnostic software tool VAG COM and is completely clear.
It is also HPI clear.
This car is a totally standard unmodified car, the exact spec as it left the factory.
any thoughts - what to offer?

Just to add:
1) MAF sensors fail regularly (as I believe they do on the 1.8T and 2.3 V5 engines). Symptoms seem to range from simply a winking engine management light on the dashboard through to erratic running/stalling. Apparently salt attacks the sensor somehow and, after a while, it fails.
2) Coil packs also often go - again, symptoms range from EMS light through to an undriveable car. I think earlier V6s had one unit for all 6 cylinders, so replacing them can cost £££s.
In 9 months of 4mo ownership I suffered both of the above, and was led to believe they were far from uncommon. I still loved the car, though - get one with sports suspension (an option from new) if you can, as it improves the handling massively.
