Ive been floating around these forums for a while, but never posted anything before. I am familiar with the basics of an engine, but nothing to complex please!!
recently i bought a 1997 bmw 523i se, after a week, it overheated and to cut a long story short, the head gasket had blown. i got it back yesterday, and intermittently when i stop it idles erraticly, sometimes stalling. After a bit of googling, i found out about a problem with nikosil cylynder linings, could this be the cause of my problems?
If so does anyone have any advice on how to solve it?

Nikasil bore wear would cause high oil consumption and erratic idle but as a mechanical problem would not really be intermittent.
It is more likely to be a sticky idle valve, situated under the inlet manifold.

It would be worth getting the fault memories read just incase any sensors are playing up.

the mileage is 116k, but it just went back into the garage. turns out the head gasket blew again.
to summerise, the engine compression during acceleration was pressurising the cooling system. take your foot off the loud pedal, and the coolant releases the pressure by going into the cylynder head.
thank god for warrenties, courtesy cars and nice garage owners!
