When the RR Classic went through its MOT I had to replace discs and pads all round. The callipers were heavily rusted and in a generally poor state but working. Now the RR is becoming a Dakar I think I should replace them. I plan to use standard callipers unless someone can suggest a reason to use something else. My reasoning is that they can stop a full blown RR and the weight I have removed must be quite significant making them more than a match for the job.

Whilst on this area another question. The discs have a tin shroud around them. Should I leave it in place or remove it?

Thanks in advance
Steve

Range rover ones should be fine. They are 4 pot twin circuit on the front. They should have no problem on the Dakar.

Take them off, attack them with a wire brush and replace seals and pistons if necessary. You'll be amazed at how well they come up.

The tin plate is a crud shield designed to minimise the amount of rubbish being thrown at the calipers and disks. Depends on how much and what type of off roading you do, some people leave 'em; some people let them rust off and don't bother replacing them. Choice is yours.

std breaks are fine, I upgraded to vented disks because of weight, power and roundabouts! - there's a simple kit that just spaces the calipers apart.

I removed the mud shields because stones kept getting jammed in them and it made power washing the brakes and disks easier.
