Hi, i'm looking to buy a new bike in the near future to replace my decrepit Muddy Fox next year. Hardtail, with a budget of £450 ish. Live virtually on Cannock Chase so lots of Follow the Dog and single track, as well as regular 3mile commutes to work. Also what size frame should I look at? I'm 5'9, and twelve stone ish. Cheers

Cannock chase awesome place to ride, was at university at stafford so rode it most days smile Is it still open all year round?

The Giant Terrago is a good buy at that money, hydraulic disk, nice frame and fork package, in all a good value, proper off road bike.

yes Get a Giant XTC hardtail. I had one a few years ago and in on XC type trails it's the best bike I've ever ridden.

If I was buying a hard tail I would look at what I could get for my money from the Kona range. (I have no objective reason for this, other than I have always fancied getting a Kona)I often look at what last year models I could get cheap, when Evans send through their offers, but I cannot justify another bike, which would not get ridden like the rest of them I own.

There have been a lot of threads asking this question in the last few months. A bit of digging through the threads should reveal a lot of advice and recommendations.

MBR have a beginners section each month in which they review entry level bikes and offer advice. WMB and MBUK do similar.

Kona are great Trail bikes, whereas Giant tender to be more XC oriented. Depends on what your style of riding is. Always arrange a test ride before you buy and make ure you're comfortable with the bike. Don't be affraid to ask about swapping out the stem and / or saddle to make the bike more comfortable for you.

Remember that a worn derailieur or poor quality shifter can be readily changed whereas there's nothing that can be done to improve a poor frame.

Don't forget to post a piccie of what you buy.

I would have to agree. When I got back into MTBing a few years ago, I bought a previous season Kona Cinder Cone. It was about £600 iirc reduced to about £475. Sold it a few years later when I bought my Mount Vision, but wish I'd kept it as it was great fun to chuck about.

Are you able to participate in the Cycle2Work scheme? I got my Specialized Rockhopper Disk for £350 through my employer; should have been £650. Great trail bike, even if the rear wheel is more square than round after thrashing around Norland Moor last week smile
