Can someone please tell me the correct way to check the oil on my Tam? I check the oil regularly but still not 100% sure if it is the correct way as different people tell you different ways. Also the oil pressure when fully warmed up(80) is at idle(800rpm) around 9psi, is this correct?
Thanks in advance

To check the oil, I follow the instructions in the manual... engine fully warmed, then switch off, unscrew cap (with a rag because is bloody hot) and check levels. I have checked when its just warming and got worried that I was very low on fuel, checked again when hot, all was fine.

Interested to know what other ways there are!

As LaserTam said, but with one modification.....
I keep a pair of gardening gloves in the boot so that I can check the oil without the smell of burning flesh.

It also means I don't need to worry about whether my cuffs etc are going to get caught on anything!

Edited to add:
And another thing..... I tend to use kitchen roll rather than a rag - I'm paranoid about dirt / lint getting into the oil.

Thanks for the replies guys! But this is where things differ slightly and seem to make a huge difference. Everyone says run your engine hot, Ok. But some say check it with the engine running(oil level seems fine). Others say check it straight after the engine has been turned off(oil level seems fine). Others say to turn the engine off, wipe the dip stick clean and put it back in straight away and take the reading from that(no reading what so ever). Sorry for sounding stupid but it is suck an important thing to check. Can someone just clear this up for me please?

Go for a decent run in the car so that the engine/oil is fully warmed up.
Stop the car, but keep engine running.
Open driver's window & open bonnet
Get gardening gloves on & kitchen roll handy
Loosen oil cap
Reach into car through (open) driver's window.
Switch off ignition
Dive around to other side of car (assuming you are right handed) and wheech out the dipstick, quickly wipe and dip again.
Take it out and read the oil level.

Doesn't everyone do this.....??????

OK chaps all good advice now this is the way to do it.

1 Get engine up to oil up to temp over 60d.
2 Remove oil cap(with hand protection).
3 Shine torch into tank.
4 Should see oil just below bottom of filler neck approx 1/2inch
5 Keep that way you won't have any problems.

I'll give that a shot next time. Advice from anyone with this amount of TVR experiece gets my vote.
(Unless he's gone through so many because they keep breaking as a result of running out of oil........ tongue out - kidding)

Just for the record all have been good cars even my first Tamora if it had been fitted with a/c I would have kept it.

All that experience and yet you keep on about Tamoras needing Air Con...you worry me.

I repeat. 2.0K, 70kgs, and its next to useless.

Not sure about the oil advice either come to that, its full of asumptions ( do you check with the engine runiing?????.

Warm up, 60deg oil temp, turn off and dip it - not too hard is it... why pee about with a torch??.

Hope you are in a better mood today Daftlad !

Do you have a fault with your aircon - mine is excellent & yes I had a Tam without it & in hot weather it was murder even with the top off.

I would repeat my comments about checking oil levels - it is an easy method & I was given the advice by the factory service manager. The torch just gives clearer view of the oil which as long as it is just below the filler neck is fine.

I am only trying to help others with my advice/opinions.

I'm fine Chris thanks, in a good mood (I was yesterday actualy!). I've just got a think about loading sports cars up with air con at extortionate costs when its ability is dubious. If its too warm, take the roof off or wind the windows down.wink My opinion, yours is every bit as valid.

The oil check advice may be sound, but you failed to mention running or turned off, guess you mean turned off. Leaning into the bonnet of a hot Tam or T350 to investigate with a torch just seems more bother than its worth and you're always trrying to guess the level.

Real important thing, and I'm sure we both agree, is that whatever method you use is consistant, and that the checks are frequent.
