Does anyone know about these. My missus raves about them for her confocal microscope but are they any better than Nikons own for DSLR photography?

Yep ... Zeiss lenses are the best a man [or woman] can get!
All my cameras have had them since 1970 and my last pair of glasses, so it's worth paying a tad more for quality.

S'why I'm so irritated at Sony for putting them in the Cybershot range, then making compromises with the camera.

They are great lenses...the best. Thats one of the reasons why I went down the route of Contax 35mm cameras years ago, before DSLR's came about.

Firstly, I don't think you can get Zeiss glass for Nikon in anything other than manual focus.

As to whether they are that much better than Nikon glass - they don't make all the crappy cheap lenses that Nikon do, and at a like for like price the Zeiss glass is likely significantly better because it lacks AF/IS/HSM and any other technology.

But since it lacks all that useful tech, how much good is that optically superior glass to you?

I'd stick with the Nikkor glass myself. It's unlikely Zeiss makes anything that's a good all round as a Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 or a 28-70 f/2.8

I've just purchased one SAL-1680, but haven't had a proper chance to play with it yet.

In my scatty, amateur opinion it transforms the camera (Sony a100) with the kit lens from "good" to "absolutely bloody brilliant". I'm simply stunned with the results!

I've always been a major fan of Carl Zeiss having had a prosumer Sony DSC F717 for 3 years and been very happy with it. After its internals disintegrated (champagne spilt on it at Le Mans!) I thought I'd go up to Sony's replacement, but felt the F717 (on ebay for £150-ish!) produced better results. I was purposely waiting for this lens to come out (knowing it would!) and as soon as it did, pounced on it.

As much as I would love to have the time to learn more about photography, I simply don't, so yes I am somewhat relying on the equipment to give results I'm happy with - and I am smile

Hopefully over the BH weekend I can get some time to have a play (now I've got the sh*t off my CCD!).

thanks for the thoughts, I should have done what my missus suggested and listened to her in the first place (so she says!).

Cheers
