XJ X350 audio - MP3s or iPOD connectivity
Discussion
Anyone know if what options there for adding an MP3 capability to the audio system fitted to X350 XJRs (04 or 05 models), e.g. an iPod or anything that replaces the CD Changer? I am after an XJR and wondering what the options will be.
If there is no Alpine or Jag offering, any creative solutions?!
Cheers

my undertsanding from jaguar and the user groups is it connects to the fibre optic system, the ipod and the usb slot all go in the glove box, when it comes to the ipod, the first 5 cds are the first 5 play lists, the 6th cd is all the songs on the ipod and it's all controlable from the screen and the steering wheel controls

pk, how did your ipod install go?
Thinking of the relatively limited control of only being able to play playlists (and I presume not being able to see the track name & artist on screen?), are there other Jaguar solutions that one can upgrade to (not too worried about cost)? E.g. the new XK's multimedia / sat nav system?

sorry in the delay getting back to you on this
I got it fitted the garage does it for £295 inc vat and fitting.
There appaer to be two ways of having it, and mine is set up a little different from the book. The book shows the switch, usb and auxillary inputs in the center console, where as with mine, they're in the glove box and only the ipod lead is in the center console. With the switch in one position the module is switched off and you use the cd changer as normal.
To use an ipod, you need to change the switch and then reset the system which is done by switching th engine off completely for more then 30 seconds. When you switch it back on and plug in an ipod, it then takes the music from there. The ipod displays the jaguar logo and the first 4 discs on the console touch screen display are the first 4 play lists on the ipod, the 5th disc causes it to play random tracks from all the music on the ipod, the 6th disc allows you to navigate the ipod using the next, back, ffw and rwd buttons, and uses the ipod screen, so you can choose a single album, artist, track etc.
You only get the names on the ipod screen when using the 6th disc mode and because the ipod takes a few seconds to boot up, it starts in radio mode and then you have to change it to cdc.
I haven't tried the usb port, but navigation is by the same way.It seems to recognise most music formats.
It will charge the ipod plugged in, unless it's a 3rd gen ( would you like to guess what i was planning to use)
It's pretty good, i haven't gone back to the cd changer since i had it installed, it's not the ideal option which would be complete control and discplay via the touch screen, but it'll do as a much bigger and more flexible way of storing and playing your music then cds

Thanks PK - I was motivated to find the handbook for this ( see http://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/extfree2viewjagpro... )
I presume "won't charge 3rd gen" means it will charge 4+ gen ipods. I hope so, anyway, life can't be that cruel! Switching between CD Changer and ipod requiring you to turn the engine off is a bit silly. But then I don't expect to use CDs.
It's such a shame the ipod functionality is so weak. I had this in my Beemer and in the end swapped the whole thing out for a Pioneer sat nav / bluetooth / dvd / ipod thing which is very good - complete touch screen control over the ipod plus an interface into steering wheel controls.
I guess when a trade up to the XJR I shall have to console myself with having all those extra horses in front of me and think less about the tunes - I have a terrible taste in music anyway!
