My Son does club to National's so hopefully I can help. All you need to do to start is get a bike, a decent helmet and a pair of decent boots. The designer gear is nice and Waterproofs are a good idea as Trials tend to run in all weathers.

You are in a pretty good area for trials so easiest would be to pick up a copy of "Trials & Motocross News" from the newsagent. This has a list of events with telephone numbers of the organiser for the next couple of weeks. You'll also find the local bike dealers in there as well. I'd go along to a Trial and watch first, we did and you get talking to the local's and find out about other clubs and trials.

You will need to affiliate to the Auto-Cycle Union which is a Tenner, you pick up a form from the club or visit the ACU web site. You do need to have it stamped by a club so you will need to join which is between nothing and a tenner, but they will let you ride in the meantime. After that an event is between £5 and £25,(usually a tenner). You Can join as many clubs as you like and as My son is very keen he rides at least twice a weekend at different clubs around Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Don't try to be a "Lampkin" at your first Trials and Do Beginners or "wobblers" trials to see how you go.

Bikes are between £500 and £4500 depending how new and well cared for they are. Many get the bigger engined bikes but a good 200 will get you round to start with. The 250's are usually set for clubman but can be a handful to start on. The bikes over this tend to be for the more expert rider or the experienced hand. There is a choice between 4 stroke and 2 stroke but the 2st's dominate club trialling. The Montesa is the best 4st but many find them too quick to shut off compared to 2st's.

Most trials are 10 sections ridden 4 times, IE 1 to 10 and back to 1. 12 and 15 sections with fewer laps are also ridden. There are also 2 x 20 and Multi Day trials where sections are ridden once and the next day has a new course. (Scott Scottish Six days etc.) but you'll find beginners and club trials stick to 10/4.

Classes are Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Expert for adults and the sections are laid out with different coloured flags, usually red blue for the most difficult course, white and yellow is usually the easiest.

New bikes are from Beta, Gas Gas, Montesa, Scorpa and Sherco. You can still pick up older bikes like the Yamaha and Aprillia and there is a big scene around the old British four strokes and Spanish two strokes from the seventies.

PM me if you have any more questions and the Trialscentral Website is a mine of info.

Did you watch a local competition then? Are you going to have a go? I used to ride trials every weekend until I sold my sensible bike-carrying car four years ago and bought a midlife crisis one! Still regret not riding, and keep promisisng myself I'll start again soon. My 03 250 Gas Gas Pro is still under dustsheets in the garage and in very good condition if you're interested...

Always fancied doing this since I passed me test last year. does anyone know of a place where you can have a "trials Day"? So that you hire the bike from them and they give you a bit of training in the morning, and then in the afternoon they do take you round some outdoor trials courses? I'm sure someone told me about a place like this, but I can't remember the name of it.

cheers

Dougie Lampkin used to do this BUT I did know a place near Edinburgh that did it full time, but that was over 5 years ago. I'll nosey around and see if it's still there. In the meantime try the Trials and Motorcross news and the Scottish ACU Website. I have had a look and they just mention the Schools but it might be worthwhile ringing up and asking if any local "schools" still exist.

Trials, real trials take place in the winter in rough country terrain, rivers and rocks should abound, tough boots trials clothing helmet gloves, most of all no fear, plenty of CONFIDENCE. have a good day. Try www. malcolmrathmell.com or guess another. as has been said buy "Trials & Motorcross paper, all good newsagents. Knibbo. X trials observer, crap at riding.
