I am in the market for a mid nineties Coupe 2.0 16v. What are the good websites and forums for information on these cars? Buyers guides etc...

Anyone got any tips?

Cheers folks.

ok thanks man.

I just read this:

Although the larger-engined cars are reasonably swift, if youre after a scalpel sharp drivers car the Audi Coupe will disappoint. The first year of production saw some awful examples leaving the factory and by 1990 a fix had been engineered into the suspension to maintain better body control. Nonetheless, the Coupe still felt inert and nose-heavy, albeit very benign should you brake or lift off the throttle mid-corner. The steering is light and feels well oiled, but it never gives the sort of feedback youd get from a BMW.
How fair is this??

Pretty fair having driven one for awhile back in 'em olden days hehe

But see it as a challenge and they did well on the rally scene

I thought they were like Audi's Corrado. I have driven a VW Corrado and been very impressed, maybe that's the way to go.

Corrado could well be your answer.
Lovely car considering it's age and a real driver's car.
Plus, parts and servicing will be easier, especially on a budget.

Yep, just got back from a fantastic 1700mile tour of France in our Corrado. Very smooth and comfortable when you want it, and a nice handling point and shoot when you are in the mood. Averaged 30mpg.
The only issues is that they are quite expensive(but hold their value well) and difficult to find a good one(especially if you are picky with specs)

hehe

Depends really! My old 8v feels very much like how this decribes whereas my S2 couldn't be further from this...

I have never driven a corrado but a few audi guys have and there are mixed views. The coupe has the better interior and normally a better build quality whereas the corrado is probably more of a drivers car.

very big community for the B3 & B4 cars. Also a great S2 buyers guide which covers most of the issues.

I have a 93 2.8 coupe quattro which i have had for 2 years, an 80 quattro previously. For my needs love it to bits, considered a corrado VR6, a 328 coupe at the time as well. Done 40k effortlessly in this car in my view a great all rounder.

Best choices will be the 20v coupe quattro, screaming 5 pot, or a late V6. Expect to pay about £2-3k for a minter. The S2 is a the top of the line up expect to pay about 4-5k for a good one, infinitely tunable. The 2.0 lumps are underpowered. But not to forget this followed from the 80s rally bred car, this variant was based on being more of a cruiser.

These cars are galvanized so tend to last pretty well. but still not immune from rust but generally body works is good. However they are heavy which means on the larger engine models they get hammered, top mounts particular weak link. I see lots of quattro badged cars that arent, quick look underneath or glance at the handbrake area for the diff switch will instantly let you know. Fuel lines are also common as the factory use mild steel, brakes get slammed for being under rated, but for general road driving they are suffice. coupes seals can leak around the rear light clusters, the door seals less so but beware these are expensive if needs be. the headlights are quite weak, i uprated mine to HID fairly quickly which has solved that one 90's through back. air con, airbags came later on from 92 onwards. There are two distinct shapes, the B3 from 88-92 and the b4 from 92-96. The 20v (170bhp) got phased out by the V6's available in 2.6(150) or 2.8(174) form. 16v FWD is not too bad in the dry but struggles in the wet. a quattro will always fair better overall. The S2 was in two forms as well the earlier 3B 220 with dizzys and the later ABY (230) with modern ignition, the later also has 380nm of torque on tap on overboost. The S2 has much more to look out for suggest looking at the s2 buyers guide which will give you a good basis.

These cars are VERY well built and will do the miles. my 80 quattro i sold with 192k on the clock and i still see it going around, 3 years on.

performance and handling on mine is not as bad as some have suggested, only uprated the exhaust for a full stainless and a modified throttle body gives the car a suitable amount of ommph, get a regular 28mpg on my 400 mile drive every week. Not the fastest, but it isn't a slouch by any means, in the rain any disadvantages are soon reeled in. have been to Bath on holiday with wife and two kids, not a small coupe either. I like the looks always have, still cleans up well.

Specwise the higher end models tend to have better interiors and toys for little extra, i have the quattro stiched interior but ideally woudl have preferred a leather interior which isn't uncommon.
