Just a few questions for those in the know....

1. How much was the 993 Turbo when it first came out? From OPCs the price for a 1996/97 car seems to be between 55-65K.

2. Are the servicing & running costs Porsche scary or just normal scary?

3. Has anybody here got experience of driving both?

4. Is there an essential spec I should be looking for to ensure I can sell it on without any hassle?

The thing I've always considered is getting a LHD 993TT. I'm convinced I'd get used to LHD and I think the savings are hard to ignore when you're looking at this level of car. But with more and more cars being Tiptronic (something I am against in principal on a 911!), surely this would make a LHD car even easier to live with?

But then I start to think about the 996 Turbo and wondering how much LHD examples of this are going for and if the cheaper 996 servicing costs (due to the servicing with the engine left in place) translate to the Turbo or whether that's just wishful thinking.

Obviously the Turbo will always hold its value well (relatively speaking), but now I'm not so sure if its worth going for a 993TT or just paying a bit extra and going for a 996TT, possibly LHD.

Any ideas, advice etc gratefully accepted!

And if anyone can recommend a good dealer who specialises in LHD cars, that would be a bonus. Albeit a potentially expensive one...

Just drive one of each and decide if the 996 warrants the extra purchasing cost and probable depreciation.

Actual maintenance costs will be similar, if not slightly in the 996's favour. Providing nothing untowards goes pop, the majority of your maintainence money will be spent on tyres and brake rotors & pads.

With RHD you should be able to get a good 993tt from about £44k, a 996tt will set you back about £68k upwards depending on mileage.

Edited to say the running costs of my 15 month old 996tt can be seen by clicking on the vehicle at the bottom of my profile.

And you can pretty much knock £10K off both those prices for LHD.

Edited to add-

"How much was the 993 Turbo when it first came out? From OPCs the price for a 1996/97 car seems to be between 55-65K"

from memory they were just about £90k (high 80's with no toys I think- I'll look it up tomorrow anyway)

and dealers want up to £65k for RHD 993T's, christ what have they had done- had 'em gold plated????

Mike, if you get to drive the two back to back I will be interested to hear your views, as I have been fantasising about turbos myself recently.

Try Joe Macari and MCP Motorsport for LHD dealers. I'm not sure if Autofarm would do LHD 996 TTs but try that as well. You may find 911virgin.com (Prestige and Performance Cars) have the occasional LHD 993TT, but I couldn't see one on their website when I last looked.

I think the 993 turbo was around 98k basic price in 97. When the 996 came out it was quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks Dazren, interesting reading on your profile page. The 993 TT has been a bit of a dream car for me for as long as I can remember, but I've always put it off to wait and see how their price went. Looking at them now, along with the way that 993s in general have held their value, I'm starting to think that the TT won't depreciate much more.

Maybe the 993 TT is the "sensible" buy, with the 996 being a few years off yet.

I don't know much about the spec of the 993 TT, so if anyone could point me in the direction of what to look out for, it would be very handy.

joel at www.rsjsportscars.co.uk normally has a couple of LHD/RHD 993 Turbos in stock.

He is based in Slough, if that helps.

Do a search on this forum re 993 and 996 Turbos for background info, plus there have been discussions about living with LHD cars.

Expect to pay 35k plus for a LHD 993tt, 45k plus for RHD 993tt and 54k plus for a LHD 996tt.

Cheers
