Yo, all!

Dished the top of this today whilst taking p/cap off (looong story as to how it happened) and at the base of the neck its leaking ever so slowly, losing a little water after an hours hot (in traffic..) drive. Not great amounts but still concerns me.

Has this happened to anyone on here and do you think that silicon sealant around the base of the filler neck will provide a temporary bodge. Will get it sorted or replaced in near (month or so) future.....but for now....

500 preserp, btw!!

Cheers

Dave.

No that gets bloody hot and will melt any silicon I'd think. I got some stuff from Homebase, Unibond ' Repair Express Power Putty' that's good up to +150 degrees, that should do it. thumbup

Cant you just get it off and get the stem beefed up with weld? Would have thought you could find a local welder to fix it at not much cost..

Yeah, much better plan....just a time thing and a few female oriented domestic issues....dont seem to have time to fart these days! Would, however, feel much happier doing this, tho. Plan to replace pipes and hoses in very near future, so are the silicone ones worth the extra dollar or not? Do this at the same time....

They are worth it IMHO. Not sure about the Griffs but ACT's pre-serp Chim ones needed a fair bit of fettling, in fairness Tim did mention it. It is easier to fit them with the tank off BTW wink

If it’s structurally sound, then use the epoxy two part adhesives as suggested, though make sure it’s clean and dry.

Only get it welded if it’s loose or fatigued, thing is, unless you have access to a good ultrasonic cleaner there will be dirt in the joint and ally welding don’t like this. The result will be pin holes that still leak and then you’ll need the adhesive anyway.

Cheers,

Simon.

Silicon won't melt at those temperatures, I've used ordinarry bathroom silicon instead of exhaust gaskets with no problemsyes
Blimey...have just picked up some "Quicksteel" putty as a kind of back up if the other stuff doesnt work too well. Ultimately just going to try pick up a new exp tank tho suggest they are a bit on the rare side?

Sorry to bring this old chestnut again, finally got to root of prob; leak was not on neck but was an extremely fine "split" on the outer edge of the tank! Bug*er, spent loads of time "finishing" off the putty around the filler neck..sorted, hopefully. After a three hour hoon around yorks, lancs and bit o cumbria! Great drive.
Hope you all had a great day hooning!
