Continuing on from my other "Brake Discs" thread, BG Developments have asked me to send them a disc so they can see if they will be able to make up new bells and fit off-the-shelf discs to them.

Because of the weight of the discs the couriers over here are looking for big money to take it over to them.

Interlink Ireland have suggested that if I could locate one in the UK that's already off a car they will be able to arrange a "pick-up and deliver" from this end.

So, have any of you got an old front disc off a '97 4.2 lying around that you'd be willing to allow take part in a bit of development?

BG should have all the dimensions they need anyway because they've done this very conversion in the past. Initially it was for Powerstation in Cheltenham (they were but might have moved now?) .. uses an alloy bell and a 304mm disc. I've fitted a few over the years. I seem to remember a clearance issue with the original kit so I took a complete front hub assembly to BG's workshop and lef it with them to pattern everything up. I've not fitted any for a while though so maybe in the staff changes the dimensions went missing but it's a very straightforward conversion.

Cheers, thanks for the info.

Do you mind if I mention you in conversation with them?

Or do you want to see if they'll make a set for you at trade price and you can finally make a few bob out of all the help and advice I've got off you (you were actually the first I rang about getting a set but your office said you wouldn't be able to help, hence the search)?

yes you're ok to mention me .. if they don't have the dimensions any more you might be better sending the whole hub assembly over .. I'm pretty sure we based it around the 32mm disc to start with which might have been why there were probems .. the TVR disc isn't an AP item as it's about 29mm wide rather than 32 or 28 which are the main AP sizes usually used. My 330mm 4.5 upgrade is 28mm and i'm pretty sure the gap in the caliper wouldnt accomodate 32mm with the bearing flex you get with sticky tyres, the 28mm was what we settled on for convenience.

I'm actually getting a company who make bits for F1 and A1 GP cars to have a look at it in the morning.

The boss man there reckons he may be able to sort it.

The phone conversation was funny when I told him what type of car it was and it was a road car and not a race car .....

"A TVR as a road car ????? In Ireland ????? You mad bastard !!!"

I'll update tomorrow when he's seen it and I know if he can sort it or not.

And, more importantly, what it'll be likely to cost.

I took the car in and he had a look at it and reckons there is more investigation needed to get to the bottom of the problem.

I'm dropping it to him in the morning.

More updates to follow.

I got it back last night ..... and turned a 30 minute journey home into more than an hours hoon.

I'm well impressed.

He had the discs off and sorted them plus he fabricated new parts where required.

The car has been transformed.

I didn't realise how bad it's handling had become as it was so gradual.

Now, where else can I go for a spin????? biggrin

The discs were perfect after having the surfaces skimmed.

The bushings in the top and bottom shock mountings had worn and were allowing the whole shock to move before it began to act in the way it should.

He machined new ones from aircraft-grade aluminium (which he uses for making bushings for F1 cars).

Also the whole steering geometry, even though it was originally set at the "correct" settings, was adjusted and corrected to suit the type of use the car gets.

It will also need a full tear-down of the suspension and all the various bushings will be replace, probably over the winter months.

I also need to fit a softer brake pad.

The handling of the car has been transformed, it is far more precise and responsive, and it doesn't shake me to death any more. biggrin

I'll take pics of the new bits and post them when I get a chance.
