106 GTI door replacement

Came back to my motor the other day to find some barsteward had put a great dent in the passenger door. This door was already repaired (not overly well) when i got the car so have decided to replace the door rather than add more gobbo.

Question is, can i fit a standard phase II door with windy up windows and transfer my leccy unit over or are the internals/ other items different. Mines a very early gti by the way with rubbing strips so trim holes are not a problem.

Also, where can i get new gear selector rods and how hard are they to fit.

main dealer for selector rods and they are so easy to fit but may be a bit hard to pull old ones off. and yes you can put your electric windows in any door as far as i know. just transfer from one to the other...

Thanks for the reply. Had a stroke of luck and fell on a gti door fully fitted just needs colour change.
Will price up the rods this week. will be nice to get away from the stick in a bucket of porridge gearchange.

Gear selector rods are easy to fit, to remove the old ones you might need a small pry bar to pop them off with. I've changed the ones on my 205 to thicker jobbies along with a quickshift kit from Constella, might be a worthwhile upgrade for a nicer, shorter shift.

You're lucky to get hold of a GTI door, because the door mouldings are different length on a GTI to the normal models (GTI's don't have a moulding on the front wing)

The only thing you might have grief with is the hinges, because they should be welded on, unless you're lucky again and they are in the right place.
