I'm sorry to say I've put up with an APS Compact and a 2003 manufactured Canon A300 digital compact for years. My last real camera was a Contax 137 with a Zeiss lens. A year or so prior to that I was using a Mamiya C220f medium format and had a darkroom setup so my slide into compact-camera hell was a rapid one.
Until my digital compact packed up a few weeks ago, that is.
Looking around for a new compact digital camera I came accross the Fuji 6500 in Jessops for £169. Certainly not compact but with all of its features for less £££ than a lower spec'd compact I thought it'd be worth a go. Seemed to get good reviews on dp review, too. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuj...
Well, after a week of trying out my new camera it's like photography has been re-invented. Being able once again to set depth of field, frame my shots with the zoom and use all the things such as aperture/shutter priority, it's a real joy. How they manage to sell this camera for that money is amazing - I feel like I've cheated Fuji. The face recognition/portrait AF is fantastic for candid shots of the kids playing in the garden.
My only regret is that when I now look at any pictures I've taken over the last 5 or so years I wonder how much better that could have been had I not been so lazy in refusing to use a decent camera. Sure a decent photo can be taken with a compact but the level of control with an SLR just helps make a good shot great. Most of my shots at the moment are of the kids and family portraits I'm a little shy of posting but once I get out and about with it I'll post some of my shots, might even try the comp'..
Only trouble is now the bug's well and truly bitten again so I'm looking to relegate the Fuji to backup camera and get a Nikon SLR with interchangeable lenses. Seems the old addage about if something's worth doing it's worth doing well is oh-so true when it somes to photgraphy.
Just a note of thanks to the members posting on here too. Believe it or not browsing this forum was the spark that got me reaching for the Fuji over another compact, especially the burger shots from a few months ago.
