Bob,

Some cracking pictures here mate, nice to see that you captured Ginny busy reading the paper!

Mac,
You are a cheeky man!

I agree with you 5+23 very nice co-ordinated piece of work by you there bloke clap You have obviously spent a considerable amount of time, effort and thought over this one bloke, not as though your Griff engine bay was run of the mill either.yum

And as for piccies 5+23..... well this is when bling goes wrong the owner has lost it, anyway all good clean fun I guess.

Nice to see a picture of WWM's Frank Smiths winning car too well done Frank.clap

Nice to see appreciation of some hard graft.

p.s. Just managed to get the speed 12 main beam / spot lights out of the pods without breaking them...just need to get a drill round em now...then try and re-fit them!scratchchin

Quite, good, but obviously not good enough eh? Anyway Steve, how did you get that mediocre look under your bonnet? I know I spent two whole days and loss of fingerprints due to flatting back and polishing on my alternator alone! Please tell.

Well Mac where shall I begin?

Well er took the engine out:

Once the engine was out Jamie (Castle Race Engines) got the block acid dipped, prior to painting it machine silver is as good a place to start as any,

then there was the whole weekend that I spent get that rough old plenum casting sanded down....and down and down and then polished to it’s present mediocre state, then getting hold of a “430 BV” badge and grinding out a space for it in the plenum top.

And then I spent a little time polishing the ACT carbon fibre trumpet base, water pump, alternator housing,

…….and the odd thing got chromed too….air flow meter bracket, throttle body, windscreen wiper motor housing, rocker oil breather, fuel rail, steering rack brackets, bottom water pipes, coil brackets, damper, alternator strap bracket, and chassis identification bracket…

…..and the stainless fixings throughout the engine bay you know stuff like the rocker cover Whitworth bolts that are a little tricky,, the stainless hose clips, custom stainless top plate I had made for the reconditioned radiator which was painted black and had the brass ends polished up, details like the four little stainless bushes I had made for it.

Oh yeah there was are those blue silicone hoses and polished oil filler neck and cap, enlarged throttle body, polished headers and y-piece collector with stainless bolts keeping it all together…plus the blue rocker covers that I painted and cured off in the oven whilst Ginny was out!

Then there was the repainted body colour engine baysmash and bulk head, with over clad inner wings -

flatting out the join line between the black pain in the engine bay and body colour paint, and filling in the cracks between the inner wing and the underside of the body, ensuring that there was a good paint finish UNDER the heat shield, this took ages on the drive in January in the snowyikes!

Plus I replaced things like the bonnet bobbins and the bonnet support holder too

Oh yeah and I tried to keep it blue and silver….

I know it’s not there yet I’ll just have to keep chipping away I guess.yes

Top job bloke [er, I mean it's OK]
I didn't get as extreme as taking engine out but I stripped down the top end so as to get to all the little nooks and crannys and give 'em the treatment.
As said earlier, spent two whole days on alternator alone; dismantled so I could clean, flat back [wet and dry] ribs, polish, then treat and paint inbetween areas and re-assemble [funny, I seem to recall a judge commenting that it had it an award on it's own, strange] Anyhow, Exhausts removed and sent away for ceramic coating, blocked all orifices to allow complete clean of engine [car supported on stands and I got covered in crap, but all for the cause, eh?] removed water pump assembly etc, so as to clean and polish. All alloy mounting brackets removed and flatted back ['ell of a job] prior to polishing. Inlet manifold cleaned and sprayed in matt silver, to contrast against cleaned and sprayed gloss silver fuel rail. Any possible wiring re-routed out of sight and any remaining either enclosed in black corrugate or if in straight line chrome central heating wrap-arounds. Expansion tanks etc, removed, flatted back and polished. Rocker covers were stripped of paint and cleaned. Then 'ribbs' were flatted back and polished carefully so as to still maintain roughcast inbetween. Then ribbs masked off and rest then given a metallic coating in blue. Same went for the plenum chamber. All steel bracketry was nickle plated as opposed to chrome to give a 'dull chrome' appearance to match the polished alloy. Exhaust clamps were polished as was any other alloy/stainless steel in bay area. All hoses [engine coolant/heater/power steering/servo/breathers and fuel lines] were stripped, cleaned and covered with stainless mesh with anodised blue clamps at ends. [Wanted all to match rather than differing finishes]. Air inlet hose coated in silver foil to afm then smooth bore to plenum. Home made heat shield around inlet hose made from stainless steel. New blue magnecor leads and matching blue disributor cap. Coil covered by a chrome exhaust tail pipe. Like you, went for a blue + alloy look to match throughout. All paint in bay was cut back and polished. Any visible chassis was cleaned and polished. Once assembled I thought, 'something is letting it down'. So I got a nice new serpentine belt to complete. It's the little things that people notice and make for a proper job don't you think?

Mac,

That's a peace of work there, done in a very neat manner too, nice one!clap

It's funny how we pretty much followed the same route, guess there are those that would think that this is a waste of time...every one to thier own, from my side of things it's part of the enjoyment of having the car.....obviously not in preference to actually driving the it though!

And yes it is the little things that matter, especially when these cars get so much interest from enthusiastic people wanting to see the cars and what makes them go so well and make so much noise!

keep it up bloke!

What next to get it up to that elusive standard though?scratchchin

Err, dunno really bloke. Perhaps a bit of strategically placed oil, muck and grime. Bit of rust here and there might help, who knows?

Brilliant idea! Gonna leave it outside over the winter with the bonnet up. Look for me on the podium next year.
