As a newbie, is it just me or does a lot of the wiring and connections under the bonnet look badly protected? i.e. waiting for something to go wrong if it gets wet?

Is there any point in try to protect them using this heat shrink stuff?

Nooo.. If you do have a problem its a nightmare to strip off, only really for tidying up cable - connector ends IMHO. You can get PVC sleeving, heat sleeve, spiral tube and the split variety, proper loom tape is much underrated as well. Main problem with water is not on cables but the connectors, silicone and electrical grease are invaluable used in the correct places.

Agree with spend. I've treated any connections and exposed wiring with silicone spray and will do so regularly. Used the stuff on previous cars I have had .... there just seems more connections/wires exposed on the Chimaera smile
