After a bit of advice on behalf of a friend. He just received a NIP from Kent Police for 75 in a 70. I know a similar thread came up recently where the case was dropped due to it being below the limit of the force in question, and was wondering if anyone knew here what Kent's policy was? He is adamant that his speedo was showing between 70-73 as he saw the mobile unit some way off.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  • ***EDIT, Just learnt that a large van has a speedlimit of 60 not 70 on a DC, you may want to remember this if you decide to drive a transit one day...*****

Kent Police?

The one who can't catch SmilerBaker's shop robbers despite crystal clear CCTV and blood samples?

At least they have their priorities straight.

Looks like the Plod are moving towards zero-tolerance enforcement of speeding offences, and just zero enforcement of all other crimes....

That's a real shame if they are, less than 10% and motorways are the safest roads in the country. A famous spoonerism comes to mind...

What's that? "scameras are s?" "The Police couldn't catch crabs in a whorehouse?"

75 in a 70????

FFS.

TBH they have a bit of a cheek trying to enforce that - although legally they can (you can be "done" at 70.00001mph, IF they can prove it (beyond reasonable doubt).

Tell him to go and kick somebody in the face

Are we sure they are being done for 75, and sure it is in a 70 limit? Haven't previous similar threads alsways ended in the discovery that either the speed being done was wrong, or the limit?

The road is the A249, Stockbury.

Here is where the mobile camera was apparently:

Yep,it's a DC but that doesn't mean it's automatically a 70 limit.......if it is then being done for 75 appears a tad harsh.

Won't the NIP have the posted limit on that road on it?

Its a road he uses every day to go home, I have also been on it many times. The first half from the M20 is a 50, then after the bends on the top of the hill it becomes national speed limit.

75 in a 70 is harsh I agree, hence why I am trying to help him!

Haven't driven down that road for a while but IIRC it's NSL and there's a central reservation (as you can see from the picture)

Yes it was a van, a Ford transit, which I'm sure does not fall in to the class you speak of.

Well hang on a second, if it's a white transit then none of the Road Traffic laws apply. I don't know what Kent think they're playing at.

From one of the Casualty Reduction Partnership websites -

"For example, on dual carriageways where a saloon car may be driven at 70mph, a Transit van, being a goods vehicle and not a "car derived van", is restricted by its class to a speed limit of 60mph."

I had not appreciated that Transits (and similar vans) were restricted to 60 in NSL DC. I know that goods vehicles are. Would the classification of his road fund license have an impact here?
